Breaking: Steelers QB Roethlisberger hurt in motorcycle crash
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured when his motorcycle was involved in a crash on the 10th Street Bridge today.

Roethlisberger was injured shortly after 11:30 a.m. at the Second Avenue side of the bridge near the Armstrong Tunnel.

Steelers' spokesman David Lockett confirmed Roethlisberger was involved and is being treated at Mercy Hospital.

An eyewitness said she saw a motorcycle headed outbound on Second Avenue as a car was coming inbound. The car made a left turn toward the bridge in front of the cyclist. The motorcycle hit the car and the operator flew into the windshield and then hit the ground.

The witness said she went to the aid of the motorcyclist and asked his name. He said it was "Ben" and tried to get up, but she told him to stay still.

The victim was bleeding heavily from a head injury.

1. I hope he's well. I wonder if this violates his contract.
I wouldn't want my ballplayers riding motorcycles.

The navy used to forbid sub sailors in Groton from riding them.

2. you'd think after the Kelvin Winslow thing
that everyone would be banned from motorcycles (Winslow, in fact, was banned from riding, and did it anyway)

4. It might violate his contract...
But regardless of whether it does or not, it was a dumb move nonetheless. First off, you're making millions of dollars, and risking serious injury that could also cost you millions of dollars is not the brightest decision in the world. Second off, he wasn't even wearing a helmet!! Isn't that kind of a common sense thing? Or perhaps it should be rephrased to a logical thing, as common sense isn't common enough....

I do hope he's alright though, as I wouldn't want anybody to really get hurt. And I am a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, so ouch!

6. First stupid question . . .
Is there no helmet laws there? If so then why not?

Second: illegal or legal this was a dumb move on his part. Regardless I wish him a good recovery and hope all is well in the end.

7. PA had a helmet law - but after years of pressure from ABATE
Edited on Mon Jun-12-06 05:51 PM by RamboLiberal
Republican legislator and Dem Gov Rendell wrote a new law that made it optional except for teen riders and or inexperienced. About 2 years ago I believe.

The Law:
STATUTE:

Title 75. Vehicles. Part III. Operation of Vehicles. Chapter 35. Special Vehicles and Pedestrians. Subchapter B. Special Rules for Motorcycles. Section 3525. Protective Equipment for Motorcycle Riders. :
"(a) Protective headgear.--Except as provided in subsection (d), no person shall operate or ride upon a motorcycle or a motor-driven cycle (other than a motorized pedalcycle) unless he is wearing protective headgear which complies with standards established by the department.
. . .
"(d) Exception.--The provisions of subsection (a) shall not apply to the following:
"(1) The operator or any occupant of a three-wheeled motorcycle equipped with an enclosed cab.
"(2) A person 21 years of age or older who has been licensed to operate a motorcycle for not less than two full calendar years.
"(3) A person 21 years of age or older who has completed a motorcycle rider safety course approved by the department or the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
"(4) The passenger of a person exempt under this subsection, if the passenger is 21 years of age or older."

8. Politicians
In some states the politicians fight against these laws. In Louisiana the previous governor fought extremely hard not to have a helmet law. The governor for some reason did not like riding his bike with a helmet. This guy was a Republican and the Republican always try to say the Democrats put forward a bad example. I think it is a bad example to ride a bike without a helmet. I just would not want to ride a bike without a helmet.

9. Hope he is OK and can play
Since he is a Steeler he will come out of this fine. If he were a Cleveland Brown it would be a careeer ending injury. Just the way fate seems to work for the Browns.

10. I'm amazed . . .
that he will be ready for opening day after seeing a photo of the windshield he went through. He's damn lucky. I'm glad he will be fine, but when are athletes going to learn to wait until they retire at age 35 to ride a motorcycle?

Anyone want to buy a Big Ben replica helmet?
