God is a football fan
...and might be Jesuit. One of my favorite stories. The Almightly is definitely paying attention.

At the end of November, 1942, Holy Cross was playing in its annual tilt against Boston College. BC had dominated the matchup, but for some reason that day, Holy Cross rose up and destroyed BC 50-0. The BC players, naturally despondent at the defeat, did not go out to the club they had chosen for their victory party.

That club was the Coconut Grove, which burned that night killing 492 people. This was the fire that caused the zoning rule which dictated that all exit doors open outwards instead of inwards. The rule came because most of the dead in the Coconut Grove died of smoke inhalation while piled up against the front door, which opened inwards.

God watches Catholic college football, and occasionally, gets involved.

2. If God were a football fan . . . .
Wouldn't she have created thick necks as a product of nature rather than through steroids and odd weight lifting techniques?
Sorry, but you're ignoring the obvious. God is a soccer fan. She is, as that country's residents often say, Brazilian after all.

3. Will , when did the "Hail Mary pass" phrase came into use?
It had t'have been a Jesuit school game, I'd guess...

11. It is older. Much older.
That's just the example that most of us in our 30s (and many others) know the best. It was wonderful to watch that Miami team lose that way.

8. It predates Flutie to Phelan.
I can remember a late game heave from Roger Staubach to Drew Pearson being called a "Hail Mary" years before the BC/Miami game.

10. Roger Staubach coined the phrase in 1975.
1975 NFC Championship Game, Dallas Cowgirls vs. Minnesota Vikings. Staubach hits Drew Pearson with a bomb in the final seconds to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
