he was not particularly well known, and people at the gym he first went to were not impressed by him. He confused muscles with boxing ability, and an old-time trainer, well-known to boxing fans, verbally humiliated him.
A lot of boxing people like Stallone, and I'm sure that they aren't wrong about him being a nice guy. I'm just not a fan of fiction, at least not when it gets in the way of reality. Many years ago, I went to a friend's house to watch a good boxing match. The guys there were not familiar with the fighters on the undercard. They opted to watch part of "Rocky" rather than watch real boxing.
I'm not big on seeing Stallone on the cover of the new Boxing Digest. I'm not offended that there is a brief article on his new movie (page 7), because Antonio Tarver plays a role. A silly role, but a role. I'm amused that there is a blurb (pages 8-9) that notes two "new" re-releases of Rocky's 1-? are being sold. But when there is a four-page article on the social implications of his new fantasy, and when Everlast/Title sells Rocky boxing equipment, I think it belongs in People magazine, or some other source for nonsense.
I should mention that my sons bought a Rocky t-shirt to annoy me with, and will from time to time tell me that some channel or another is replaying one of his films. I am sure that when the younger one gets back from college, and sees the new Boxing Digest, he will get a kick out of it.
