Warning! Tennis spoiler...
..Serena just lost. If Justine beats Maria tonight, I can't see anyone stopping her.

1. Not much of a shock she lost. Didn't expect it in straight sets though.

2. She deserved to lose
Betrayed the lime green buffalo suit that served her so well last year.

I saw the end of the match after clicking from the debate analysis. Serena broke when Jankovic served for the match at 5-3, only to be broken back to end the match.

I've gotta say I love it. Those Serena commercials for her hefty clothing line are the epitome of annoying, IMO. She struts as if she thinks she's sexy, but all I see is a butt that will swell to 400+ pounds when she retires.

Last year is looking more and more like a whale wide fluke. Serena has been ousted before the final in every subsequent major.

12. Serena had the potential to be the best of all time
Edited on Fri Jan-25-08 02:16 AM by Awsi Dooger
Not merely my opinion. Many others have voiced it, including Chris Evert in an open letter to Serena. Evert thinks Serena could have won 20+ majors.

Instead, she insists on focusing on a clothing line when she's still in her prime years, and shows up out of shape in majors.

Nothing serious, just wasting your number one gift, then making excuses in the aftermath.

That's also nothing new to Serena, and I'm sick of it. When she lost to Henin in the US Open quarters last September, her 3rd straight quarters loss to Henin in consecutive majors, she claimed Henin was lucky, instead of crediting her. This time she says she had the match on her racket. Even though she lost in straight sets and never even made it into a tiebreaker.

...she seems to win a grand slam every 2 years, so she's due.

5. Oh, this is about women's tennis.
What a joke.

Poor A. Roddick gets beat in a gut-busting 5 setter to a guy hitting nothing but winners and people come out of the woodwork to slag him off like he's insulted the looks of their baby.

Yet, some mega-grunting female player can crush the 'worlds no. 1' player (Henin)in straight sets--and the second set 6-fucking zero--and people think it's of interest.

You'll (in the general sense(youse people!)) never see The Fed lose the last set 6-0 (much less Andy Roddick) in a fucking grand slam event.

Peeps think that women's tennis is more competitive because they rally longer than men.

Feh.

And:

Serena, the John Daly of women's tennis--sans the drinking problem-- shows up overweight and out of shape (again) and loses--and we're supposed to be surprised.

The Williams sisters are the pride and sorrow of women's tennis.

Such as it is.

Meh.

7. I agree totally.
I prefer mens tennis. The porn grunts get annoying and people like Sharapova taking 20 seconds between serves drive me nuts. There are few if any top ranked men who do that.

6. Henin didn't look at top form from the outset
Obviously Sharapova dismantled her but even prior to that Henin was clearly below her form of late last year.

Sharapova can appear so limited in certain matches, but every once in a while she plays toward that #1 ranking that I never think she deserves.

It may be sexist in nature, but I love the tall athletic figures of most of the new babes in tennis. It's almost like watching women's collegiate volleyball. Now we just need clingy short shorts, and get rid of the damn dresses. :)

Nice effort by Venus so early in the season, atypical for her. But I rooted the other way tonight and was pleased it ended in straights. Too often a Williams sister pulls out a close second set then the opponent wilts in the third.

15. I just watched it
(Had to avoid DU and all news until I was finished.)

Roger was either outplayed or ill. Or ill because he was being outplayed. But he was never in the match at all.

17. He was ill and never played the warm up tournaments on the new surface.
But I think it has to do with the raising skill levels of mens tennis overall.

18. YAY! So happy for Novak.
:bounce:

Good to see some new blood in the final; well Novak made US Open final but still. I was getting a bit sick of Federer and Nadal, although I love Nadal.

GO NOVAK!

16. A #1 should always be seeded to play #4 in the semis
That's my only beef with the Federer result. Makes no sense for Federer to play Djokovic in that round. Djokovic by rights should have been in Nadal's half.

Now it's an interesting year for Fed. Unless he wins the French, there will be huge focus on him at Wimbledon, trying to avoid 3 majors without a win, and Djokovic looming large as the potential replacement at #1.

That first set is always crucial. More than some of the commentators want to concede. The math swings massively based on who takes it. When Federer failed to serve out the first set, suddenly it was a 50/50 match instead of lopsided favoritism.

19. Sharapova takes it
Entire tournament without dropping a set. I think tonight was 7-5, 6-3. Broke serve for the match after losing only 2 points on serve in the second set.

Gad, the thank you speech was worthy of John Kerry. Impressive in spots but I don't think she stopped for a sentence break while weaving maybe 20 different topics into play.

More variety along with the typical aggressiveness tonight. But someone like Serena at her best is far superior to Maria. That's what is sickening about Serena's weight issues and lack of focus the past few years. Henin and Sharapova are nice players but they scream as second tier talent. Ridiculous that a great natural player like Serena isn't even around for one semifinal the last 4 majors.

20. Every two years Maria gets very focused in one of the Slams...
...2004 Wimbledom, 2006 US, 2008 Australia...otherwise she's very inconsistent.

21. Men's final
After winning the first set, unseeded Frenchman Tsonga wasn't able to stop Djokovic.

I was pulling for Tsonga. Djokovic with his bouncing balls is annoying. But haven't the Serbians come far in this tournament?
