When does the college football season start?

Being from Boston, I wasn't raised in an evironment where college football is a big deal; BC is the biggest story around here, and that's about it.

But my main football friend is from Penn State, his brother went to Ohio State, our other friend is from Michigan, so I've gotten a crash course in the last few years.

Now I'm anxious. It starts earlier than the NFL, right?

NFL and College usually start around the same time. College season ends in late November and most of December there is nothing until the Holidays come around for the bowl games.

My favorite time of year!

Most of the first few weeks of games are the big teams beating up on small-town teams. There are exceptions, but normally the season doesn't really start to heat up until conference play begins.

First week (from the top of the espn list posted above):

Oregon State @ Stanford.........(early season league match-up only I care about, Beavs play Penn State next week!)

Hawaii @ Florida................(looks like a mismatch(bigtime))

Appalachian State @LSU..........(yeah, MI thought so too.)

Alabama @ Clemson................(can't think of anything to say)

USC @ Virginia..................(UVA 9-4 last year, how's this year going to be?)

Oklahoma State @Washington State. (Cowboys v. Cougs. big 12 pac 10. not the elite, mind you)

Washington @ Oregon...............( Go Huskies!)

Illinois @ Missouri...............(Two very good teams from last year, at least)

Michigan @ California.............(the Bears saw enough of that spread option crap last year with the Ducks. Can they beat it again?)

Kentucky @ Louisville............(Louisville had it rough last year with Brohm, how's it gonna do without?)

Tennessee @ UCLA.................(UT sure has been making the rounds of the Pac 10 lately. UCLA coach new-weasel's first game...)

from the end of the Super Bowl to the opening kickoff of college football in late August.

My Oregon State Beavers are not going to be there to beat the Tar Heels in the

The only reason I'm excited about getting home from Europe is American College Football being a few blocks and a free ticket away from my house.

Penn State opens against, get this, Coastal Carolina.
Liberty was the champ of their division last year.
