Dayyum! Although I am a Ducks fan, I have to say that the Red Wings
just got as thoroughly hosed as it is possible to be hosed... :wow:

1. The NHL is a fucking joke. Unfuckingbelievable!
The league wants seven game series.

And so it will be.

3. I don't get why it isn't a live play until the whistle, like in football
The puck was clearly in before the sound.

If I was a Detroit fan, I would probably be burning something down right about now. (Or drinking heavily, which is what I actually am doing... :))

6. It's not the whistle. Play is dead when the ref thinks he's gonna blow the whistle.
The whistle is for the fans.

No shit.

That's what they said.

8. Oh, I heard them. and I thought they were joking the first time they said it.
It's a ridiculous rule - players (and fans) aren't mindreaders. Players have to perform, not just 'decide' to perform; refs should be held to the same standard. What's next, the save is made when the goalie thinks he's going to make the save? :sarcasm:

5. 60 minute game
Had the Redwings played strong the whole 60 minutes they wouldn't have gotten hosed.

They lost.
Accept it

4. Anaheim is very very good - definitely better than the typical #8
But, they sat back for those last 3 minutes, and by rights they should have paid for it...

7. Robbed twice.
First on the horseshit penalty that led to the Ducks' go-ahead powerplay goal and then again on that late whistle call-off. That'll get them good and mad, this series going to heat up even more.

15. I agree, and they were also terrible about showing the replays of the penalties
as a lifetime Wings' fan, I am STEAMED. And I'm sick of Niedermayer sucker-punching guys in the head when he thinks no one's looking. What's up with that? What can't they just fricking play the game?

9. I'm so fucking sick of the quick whistle
The refs should wait at least a second, maybe two, after they lose sight of the puck before blowing the whistle. I want the Ducks to win but this is absolute horseshit.

I'm just waiting for one rebel ref to say....."I can't see the puck..I'm going to blow the whistle...damn I can't get the effing thing out of my pocket, eh?...Oh, wait! There's the effing puck!" *quietly, nonchalantly, slips whistle back in pocket*

Oh, sweet anarchy!

10. Yeah, I don't see the point of it, or the whole 'play is dead when the ref
secretly decides it is even if he hasn't yet whistled' stuff.

I could understand the quick whistle if it was intended to protect the goalie from getting whacked at when the puck is under him or something, but goalies are already getting pushed around this playoff, and a couple seconds won't change anything...

I've got no vested interest in the series, since i'm a Blackhawks guy, but when i saw that reply on NHLTV last night, i couldn't believe that was ruled a no-goal.

Sheesh!

13. So far Anahiem is outplaying the Wings
in fact, through 3 games, it's looking very much like the series with the Sharks. The Ducks are playing good physical tight checking hockey and Hiller is looking great.

As has already been mentioned, Anaheim is anything but an 8 seed. Not only were they one of the hottest clubs at the end of the season but they carry the nucleus of a team that won the Cup just a couple years ago, which includes 2 Norris Trophy winners.

Detroit needs to stop sniveling and get to work...game 4 is almost a must win, they fall behind 3-1 to the Ducks and they're all but done.

14. That sucked
Then they shove Datsyuk in the back with a stick after the game just to rub it in?

Well, if the Wings keep throwing it at the net, it will start going in. No one is going to make 62 saves every game.

16. "if the Wings keep throwing it at the net, it will start going in"
maybe, maybe not...The Sharks outshot the Ducks in every game of the series, for a 6 game total of 230-156. Yet they still lost.

17. The Wings generally outshoot their opponents by a LOT
I expect that. But they've only scored 8 goals (I'm counting the stolen one) in 3 games, which is low even with the other goalie getting a lot of saves. And, that includes a triple OT game (they had a lot of shots in the 2nd OT of Game 2).

I do wish they'd put Dats and Zettie together for a couple of shifts tomorrow to open up the game. We need to pressure their goalie early.

18. I've sent a letter to the NHL and its sponsors
saying that I'm going to intentionally not purchase items which sponsor the NHL due to their inability to properly officiate the game.

It stands as the most bullshit call I have ever seen. You can see that the ref sees the puck in the net before he whistles. The goal alarm was already going off, everyone watched it go right in.

I guess they just have to cheat if they expect to beat the wings.

21. I wrote an email to the NBA during the 2004 finals
I asked them why they had travelling as a rule if they weren't going to enforce it against the Lakers and told them I thought the officiating was one-sided. Much to my surprise, they seemed to take my comments to heart, because after that the officiating got better and the Pistons won in 5.

So you see? It can work!!!!

I do think that sometimes when there is a particularly bad call and the officials are more in the spotlight, the officiating improves. I've never understood why the officiating crew doesn't have to send out a representative to take questions after something like this. Yes, a lot of it is judgement, and you don't want to review every play. But it seems as if officials never have to answer for ANYTHING. And IMO, this goal was clearly reviewable, as is (supposedly) EVERY GOAL SCORED in the NHL.

25. Sure I saw it
and on replays it appeared to me as if the whistle sounded simultaneously with the puck being knocked into the net. It was a bad break for the Red Wings but it's not as if it's the first time a refs whistle has been blown prematurely because he lost sight of the puck...to claim it was cheating, is rather ridiculous..don't you think?

There was no guarantee Detroit was going to win that game even if the goal was allowed..they're facing a tough Anaheim club.

I'm sure Babcock has got them focusing on game 4, instead of sniveling over game 3.

26. All the replays they showed here clearly showed puck in the net
before the whistle. They are not even claiming it was because he blew the whisle before the puck went it, they are claiming he thought about blowing the whistle before the puck went it.

Is it cheating of a ref to call back a goal because he thought about blowing the whisle before it went it?

29. Fark. The officiating sucks.
I don't particularly care for the Ducks or Wings, seeing as I'm a massive Habs fan, but this is ludicrous.

They games I saw as a kid at the Forum seem so different than the games now. And, that was only 15 years ago!

30. With 4 on-ice officials and replay...
couldn't they do SOMETHING about a play like that? Just have the guy who blew the play dead check whether (1) the puck went in before the whistle sounded and (2) it had not been covered. I don't think many refs would have a problem saying "my bad" on such calls because everyone loses track of the puck from time to time. I think you still want the refs to blow plays dead when the puck disappears (trust me, it CAN get worse for the goalies!), but when it ends up in the net it's worth taking a few minutes to sort out whether the goal should stand.

But my years of beer league hockey have taught me one thing - a goal is what the ref says is a goal. Only way to preserve your sanity after seeing your shot go in and out too many times without the whistle and ref's arm pointing at the net...
