Red Sox announcer Remy takes leave of absence

BOSTON (AP)—Red Sox announcer Jerry Remy is taking an indefinite leave of absence after having setbacks following cancer surgery.

The announcement was made Wednesday on the Web site of New England Sports Network. The 56-year-old Remy does color commentary for the network’s Red Sox games.

Remy is a former smoker who had surgery for lung cancer late last year and later developed an infection and pneumonia, according to the site. The former major league second baseman for California and Boston said he disclosed his illness to reinforce the dangers of smoking.

Former pitcher Dennis Eckersley filled in for Remy at Wednesday night’s game against the Cleveland Indians beside play-by-play announcer Don Orsillo, who has teamed with Remy since 2001.

“I want to focus on completing my recovery so that I can return to work without distractions or interruptions,” Remy said on the site. “I hope that disclosing my bout with cancer will reinforce the dangers of smoking to every member of Red Sox Nation, especially children.”

5. Remy underwent surgery for lung cancer
late last year....the 5 year survival rate is something like 15%...the poor guy.

All those who defend smoking or are puffing away right now ought to take a good look at Jerry Remy.

...and it's not a habit, it's an addiction...habits you can give up easily, addictions you can't.

7. Best wishes Rem Dog.
One of the few announcers worth listening to, in any sport.

8. Too bad. I enjoy their announcers.
One perk of the baseball package is we get to hear the regional announcers, and I really like theirs.

11. He's done some work on Fox
Why he hasn't been picked up by Fox or ESPN is a mystery. He's much more knowledgable and entertaining than Joe Morgan or "Jim McGyver".

Maybe it's his thick New England accent...

9. Well, hey. That sucks.
I'm in a dynasty league with a few Red Sox fans and they kept saying something things like "too bad about Rem-Dog."

Now I know what they're talking about.

Poor guy. I hope he gets better soon.
