Thank you for your letter and expression of views concerning my website.Allow me to address your concerns one at a time.
<quoted from my e-mail> Your created website "Umbert the Unborn" is quite a disgusting piece of propaganda.<quote> I don't see how you can label Umbert disgusting. What is so disgusting about a cute unborn baby with hopes, dreams and aspirations of his own. Fanciful perhaps, but disgusting? It doesn't quite fit the definition of disgust. Yes, it is propaganda if by that you mean I am attempting to persuade readers to a certain point of view. You being pro-choice should recognize propaganda when you see it. Planned Parenthood and NARAL certainly put out their share of it.
<quote> The fact that you are overhumanizing an unborn fetus and making difficult decisions in people's lives into a sickening comic strip shows your maturity and lack of knowledge on the issue. <quote> How can you overhumanize a human being? You can certainly dehumanize one, as pro-choicers have done for the last 30+ years by calling an unborn child a blob of unviable tissue. But any ninth grade biology student knows that at the moment of conception, a unique and distinct human life begins. HUMAN LIFE. How does my portrayal of Umbert give him too much humanity? I think what you mean is too much humanity for your comfort. It must bother you greatly to even think of something you've advocated killing could possibly be human at all. Yet you and I both know that it is. As for my maturity and knowledge, I am 50 years old and have studied this issue since a group of Supreme Court justices took it upon themselves to become legislators and rule that Americans in the womb have no right to life if the mother chooses to kill it. You are the first person to ever claim to be sickened by the comic strip, which implies that you actually read it. It reminds me of the old joke, "Doctor, it hurts when I do that." The Doctor replies,"Then don't do that!" If reading Umbert the Unborn causes you extreme bouts of nausea, I recommend you discontinue use. What I really think you're suffering from are pangs of guilt. Perhaps I should print a warning label on my strips. DANGER: READING THIS COMIC STRIP MAY CAUSE NAUSEA IN PRO-ABORTION READERS AS WELL AS SEVERE PAIN IN THE CONSCIENCE. IF SYMPTOMS PERSIST, SEE YOUR PRIEST OR SPIRITUAL ADVISOR. (Hey, thanks for the idea, that would make a great strip.) <quote> I'm not requesting you take the website down, but for the Catholic church to endorse this lowers my opinion of them even greater than it already is after thrashing John Kerry and decent pro-choice Catholic Democratic politicians at every turn. I am a pro-choice Catholic Democrat and made the conscientious decision to be so after looking at the many issues that go into this decision. <quote> Why would your opinion of the Church be lowered by its support of something that conforms to its teaching? Is your opinion of the American Cancer Society lowered when it supports anti-smoking advertising? The Catholic Church is PRO-LIFE and teaches the respect for all human life from conception to natural death. As for these so-called "decent pro-choice Catholic democrats," can you please tell the difference between a decent pro-choice Catholic democrat and an indecent one? Isn't pro-choice Catholic an oxymoron? I guess you are one of these designer catholics who refashion the Church in their own images to conform to what liberals are wearing these days. You have the right to conscientiously decide your position on any issue you choose, (God gave us free will), but do you have the right to call that position Catholic? Unless you are the Pope or a member of the Magisterium, I don't see where you have that authority. Or do you propose we put the Church's position on moral issues to a vote? Patrick, my purpose in creating Umbert the Unborn is to finally give a voice to a forgotten member of our society and, by doing so changing the hearts and minds of people on this important issue. I did not storm into the privacy of your home with this message and force you to listen to it, you chose to hear it and you find that it bothers you. That's a great starting point to rethinking your position on the abortion issue. I'll tell you what, prove to me scientifically and from Natural Law that the unborn child is not a real human being and I'll never draw another Umbert cartoon. Until you do, I intend to continue Umbert's message of Life until every child's God-given right to Life is acknowledged and protected by humankind in whose care God entrusted these precious unborn persons. I bear you no ill will for expressing your feelings about my work. On the contrary, I respect your right to disagree and I will pray that God touches your heart and inspires you to use that passionate voice of yours in the defense of His Creation. God's blessing and peace be upon you, Patrick. Respectfully, Your friend For "Life," Gary Cangemi
Comment:
Well, his response was well written. However, he has one nerve calling me a "designer Catholic" and thinks it's humorous regarding making pro-choicers feel sick to our stomachs like many of us are.
