What about
Having a class in school that teaches about every religion? Not preaching or favoring anything, just to educate.

1. Define religion.
Who will determine what qualifies as a religion?

2. Comparative religion.
It's available in college.

I think you don't find it before college because so many families don't want their kids taught about other religions--so it's not offered until students are "adults."

3. Not needed, Seperation of church & state.
As adult, can take as a college class. A class that would just cause problems & conflicts between students, not to mention parents. We have enough of that already. Stick to basics, we are not doing too well with them. This would just muddy the waters more.

4. Good idea. Saying no one should be taught about religion.....
... is like saying no one should be taught to understand the culture in which we live.

Undestand: I'm agnostic but most of the world's history is not.

The devil... if you'll excuse the expression... will be in the details. *Who's* religion?, exactly. And what are we going to teach about it?

5. I took one in college
I loved it! I love history, too, so being able to connect it all together was great.

6. If it is not preaching or playing favorites
Edited on Thu May-14-09 10:00 AM by Taitertots
It would be offensive to every religion.

Mohamed would look like a war lord with mental problems
Jesus would be a black guy with mental problems, described in a book written by people who never met anyone that met Jesus.
Mormons, scientologists... I don't even need to go there.

7. World Religion courses are available at universities...
It was the first class I took at my local community college.

Funny--I went to a very good public high school and there were no courses like this available, but Catholic schools seem to have them. I don't know if they wander much beyond their own faith, however.
