Another reason to oppose tying teacher pay/tenure/employment to standardized tests
Imagine for a moment that you had a middle school or high school class that disliked their teacher. As revenge, they could conspire with all their fellow classmates to intentionally do poorly on the test, so as to damage their teacher's career.
Another important thing to consider is that some kids love one teacher while other kids hate that same teacher.
The very best kindergarten teacher I have ever worked with - I have an 8th grade student this year who had her in kdg. I told her how lucky she was to have been in her class and she said "Yuck. I HATED her."
Blew me away.
When I asked her why she hated her she said because she gave her homework and "That's ridiculous to give homework in KINDERGARTEN!"
So I told her it is school district policy to give all the kids homework, even the kindergarteners. And she said "Well that's stupid. She should have broken that rule."
And some people think this child's test scores should determine my pay. :banghead:
3. What about the teachers whose subject areas are not tested?
That's what I would like to know, Arne!
Personally, I don't think middle-schoolers could put together that complex of a plot, because it would involve too many students. And the goody-goodies would "tell"! Don't you just love that age group? :eyes:
4. Paying teachers for student test scores is like paying cops only if they prevent
all crime while they are on duty. Doctors only get paid if their patients never get sick. Firemen only get paid if there are no fires on their watch. How about if politicians only got paid if their laws made a direct improvement in their district. At the rate we are going in Florida we could save a ton of money because the only politician worth a paycheck is Grayson. What is wrong with getting paid for doing your job? Every teacher I know attends various workshops both during the school year and during the summer months. Many have advanced degrees that took time and money to earn, and to have politicians trying to pass Bill 6 to make all of that hard work meaningless is insulting and degrading beyond words.
5. a sub teacher got arrested for 'molesting' a child who was just a
crafty little bastard who set her up with classmates. I remember a teacher when I was in school who hanged himself after being wrongfully accused of sexual abuse. Kids aren't always fun.
