Pro-reorganization slate wins all three contested KC school board seats

A youthful mix of race and gender swept into the Kansas City school board Tuesday night, promising clearer sailing for an ambitious plan to remake the district.

Kansas City school board candidates Kyleen Carroll, Crispin Rea Jr. and Joseph Jackson won the three contested seats with commanding victories.

Their victory also signified a triumph for Superintendent John Covington, whose administration is embarking on the massive transformation plan that includes closing 26 schools.

“I think the residents are sending a very clear message,” Rea said. “They want their district to go in a new direction. They’re rejecting the status quo.”

1. so closing the schools is what the public wants . . .

2. or maybe it's that the "opposition," wasn't....

The losing slate, aligned with board President Marilyn Simmons, had run what they called an unconventional campaign. They ran without endorsements and with little fundraising.

They said they supported Covington, but they thought the superintendent should not be “right-sizing” the district, but “super-sizing” it. They wanted the district to seek more opportunities to grow and take a more deliberate approach in closing schools.

wow, such "choice".

fix is in, baby.

3. Most interesting election in years
Last couple elections candidates ran unopposed. Several of the current members were appointed when members resigned. So finally electing members is a good thing.

And the best candidates won.

are you agreeing with the reading that the vote validates the decision to close schools?

5. They are supportive of the teachers as well as the children
The opposing team was not. They were more about the politics and 'prestige' of being a school board member.

I also agree with the closings. The district is broke. You can't run a district in the red. Keeping schools open would have forced the district into bankruptcy and state takeover.

7. But Simmons voted against the closings
So it's hard to tell if she supports Covington or not.
