Arne says: We absolutely see this (teacher cuts) as an emergency

Districts Warn of Deeper Teacher Cuts

School districts around the country, forced to resort to drastic money-saving measures, are warning hundreds of thousands of teachers that their jobs may be eliminated in June.

The districts have no choice, they say, because their usual sources of revenue — state money and local property taxes — have been hit hard by the recession. In addition, federal stimulus money earmarked for education has been mostly used up this year.

As a result, the 2010-11 school term is shaping up as one of the most austere in the last half century. In addition to teacher layoffs, districts are planning to close schools, cut programs, enlarge classes and shorten the school day, week or year to save money.

<snip>

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan estimated that state budget cuts imperiled 100,000 to 300,000 public school jobs. In an interview on Monday, he said the nation was flirting with “education catastrophe,” and urged Congress to approve additional stimulus funds to save school jobs. “We absolutely see this as an emergency,” Mr. Duncan said.

10. They make first-year teacher salaries,
Edited on Tue Apr-20-10 11:52 PM by tonysam
but they aren't in line to receive "tenure"; instead, they are like the one-year-only teachers Washoe County School District and other districts around the country use. Use them for a limited duration, and then toss them out like dirty Kleenex.

Pretty soon college graduates or even high school graduates won't be needed to teach students if a middle school education is seen as the "only" hope for "loser" students the World Bank wants to exploit as cheap labor.

4. With all the teachers out of work it will also be easy to slash salaries.
You won't work for $8/hr? We'll find someone who will. Teachers used to be able to raise a family on their salaries - now we need second jobs.

11. They don't even WANT certified teachers
Hell, just pull any desperate person off the street like some third world countries do and they will work for pennies a day or even not be paid at all.

12. I work two extra jobs because I teach in Florida. Also, I am going to freeze
my student loan payment because once SB6 finally passes there is no point in paying for a worthless master's degree. They can send the bill to Arne or Jeb if they can tell them apart.
