CNNs homophobia rises again...

CNN poll: Generations disagree on same-sex marriage

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A new national poll suggests a majority of Americans oppose legalizing same-sex marriages, but the survey indicates a vast generational divide on the issue.

The recent poll shows that those who have a gay friend or relative are more likely to support gay marriage.

Fifty-four percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll released Monday say marriages between gay or lesbian couples should not be recognized as valid, with 44 percent suggesting they should be considered legal.

But among those 18 to 34 years old, 58 percent said same-sex marriages should be legal. That number drops to 42 percent among respondents aged 35 to 49, and to 41 percent for those aged 50 to 64. Only 24 percent of Americans 65 and older support recognizing same-sex marriages, according to the poll.

While a majority of those polled oppose legalizing gay marriage, six of ten said states that do not recognize gay marriages should allow civil unions. When it comes to supporting civil unions, the poll indicates a similar generational shift.

Three states -- Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa -- currently allow same-sex marriages. A law passed by Vermont legislators that makes gay and lesbian marriages legal takes affect in September. New Hampshire lawmakers are close to passing a similar bill.

Some how a tied poll means its not tied.... wtf?

4. This has not changed in years. Younger people have never been
opposed. This why at least 2 or 3yrs ago, someone on C-Span
explained that in 10 years there would be more of an opportunity
for Same Sex Marriage to be accepted nationally.

5. I think you misread it - it's 54 to 44
but it often depends on how it's worded.

Wash Post poll two weeks ago showed a majority favored it.

7. I'm actually surprised by the 65 and older group
It means that SOME OF US aren't doing our part.

Of all those polled, the ones aged 65 and older are the most likely to have a gay descendant. So either they are the coldest pieces of crap in human form- or their gay descendants aren't making sure that grandpa is on board.

12. Mine, too...
my mum had no issue with same-sex marriage...hell, she attended our wedding in 2007! I was very surprised to find many members of my family, Missouri Synod Lutheran, Catholic or Evangelicals, to be supportive and pretty damned tolerant if not downright accepting for their faith groups. My uncle said that he had no earthly idea how ANY same-sex marriage would be a threat to his 50-year straight marriage. I was very happy and impressed to find this out. I wish I'd known this at the time of my marriage...I would have invited the lot to our wedding...I only found out at my mum's lying-out before the funeral. It was mostly because I really never dealt with my paternal side of the family, but my mum kept in contact with them after my da died back in the 70s. (In fact it was my Evangelical cousin that helped my late mum to to overcome her former homophobia. But when she did, she did get on board completely bless her little 91-year old heart. It just proves that even the seniors are far from hopeless... and that I sure as hell had my perceptions turned around!
