Gays.com Struck by Distributed Denial of Service Attack on Eve of International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

LGBT social network Gays.com experiences DDoS attack before launch of video for International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

05.15.2009 – Social network Gays.com today announced that it experienced a massive distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack that began at approximately 7.10am Hong Kong Time on May 15, 2009, causing the entire website to be inaccessible.

A distributed denial of service attack occurs when a multitude of systems attempt to flood the bandwidth or resources of a targeted system with illegitimate website requests. The flood of traffic by these requests cause the Internet bandwidth of the attacked site to be consumed to such an extent that the website is inaccessible to other legitimate users.

WashingtonBlade: We apologize for the site outage. Our server is being attacked by hackers overseas. We're working toward a fix. Thanks for your patience.

2. Just cause its coming in from overseas doesn't mean the hackers are overseas.
Its common to proxy through sites in another country because international investigations are harder to pull off.

3. True - but then the attacks are still coming from an overseas server
we get them frequently at the company I work for. Hopefully the sites under attack will get up and fast (one of them is launching an anti-homophobia campaign today).

4. Its really to bad the Internet isn't stronger against DoS attacks in general.
They've been such a big thing for such a long time, I wonder if anybody has really sat down and looked at how they could be managed. I don't have any brilliant ideas, but it seems like something could be done.

5. Or should we use the same weapon against our enemies?
Make a list of the websites to flood on a given day and everyone jump on the net. Tell me how this is done. It sounds like the fundies are using this kind of censorship to their advantage. Why not us?

6. Its against our principles.
Unlike the opposition, we believed that a well informed people is capable of self government, we don't need monarchs. That means we trust people to be big boys and girls on information choices. If we believe in censorship, then we believe in an authoritarian elite worthy of doing the censoring, which means we don't believe in the equality of people, which means we are Republicans. :(

7. These DDoS attacks
I bet the DDoS attacks comes from Russian Nazi Skinheads. The same skinheads who are homophobic, yet perform to females.

Nazi pig disgusting.
