Militant anti-gay church turns its sights on Jews (Westboro Baptist)
Ahhh, the beautiful morphing of the axis of intolerance: homophobia, misogyny, and anti-Semitism.

Thursday, May 14, 2009 | return to: news & features, national Militant anti-gay church turns its sights on Jews

by eric fingerhut , jta

After years of focusing on gays and lesbians with its protests, the Westboro Baptist Church has a new target — the Jewish community.

The Topeka, Kan.-based church, which features the slogan “God Hates Fags,” protested at three Jewish sites in Washington, D.C., on May 8. The protests are part of a series of upcoming rallies that will bring members of the church to Jewish community institutions in Omaha, St. Louis, South Florida and Providence in the next few weeks, according to the church’s Web site and fliers the group is distributing that list scheduled protests and proclaim “Jews Killed the Lord Jesus.”

Led by Fred Phelps, pastor of the 71-member church, Westboro Baptist first gained notoriety about a decade ago when it began picketing the funerals of gays or those they thought were gay — including Matthew Shepard, who was the victim of an anti-gay attack.

In recent years, church members frequently have protested outside the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, or at other events that are likely to bring news coverage and, in turn, publicity to the church.

While picketing outside the Washington office of the Anti Defamation League on May 8, Phelps’ daughter Margie said that the group is now focusing on the Jewish community because church members have been “testifying” to non-Jews for 19 years that “America is doomed” and they haven’t gotten the message.

“Now it’s too late,” she said. “We’re done with them.”

Margie Phelps added that “one of the loudest voices” in favor of homosexuality and abortion is “the Jews, especially the rabbis.”

2. This is hate speech
the logical conclusion to the milder variant spewed by LDS and the Vatican.

4. particularly when there is an environment that tolerates intolerance
How else can we explain someone like Pat Buchanan being on TV as a pundit, while he spouts hateful views about Latinos, gays, and has written a book that is as close to Holocaust denial as one can get without being labeled as one (Buchanan argues that the West force Hitler to go to war with it).

11. I don't think they have even 71 members...
...unless you count infants and toddlers. Westboro is essentially one insane pastor, his wife, his fourteen (!) children, their spouses, and their children.

BTW, although the Branch Fredphelpsians advertise themselves as "Westboro Baptist Church," every Baptist denomination in the world has renounced them. When they picketed the Episcopal Church's General Convention in the mid-'90s, they drew their own picketers from (I believe) the American Baptist Church, protesting against their use of "Baptist" in the Branch Fredphelpsians' name.

so that they don't gain any new adherents.

8. I Don't care about Free Speech....
people like this who spew hatred and intolerance and further fan the flames of intolerance should not have the right to threaten others. There should be a hate speech exception to the First Amendment.

10. Note the difference in reaction...
Gay-bashing = "Oh, they're just being conservative Christians, with a right to express their opinion. It's a free country, after all."

Jew-bashing = "What an outrage! This cannot be tolerated!!!!!"

What's wrong with this picture?

13. You Are So Correct!

Just Wait... This New Hair Brained Idea Will Really Put Them In Hot Water....

If they really follow through with harassing the Jewish community, something will finally be done with them......

Now let me be clear.... THAT NO ONE, "QUEER, NOR JEWISH" should have to endure abuse from these homegrown religious terrorists before some insane person accuses me of having anti-semantic views......

16. As a queer and a Jew, I am totally opposed to Westboro's hate speech
which sadly it is being repeated by the likes of the Vatican and LDS.

It is noteworthy that those opposed to gay marriage equality, are also opposed to full equality for women, and hold views that are anti-Semitic.

19. Picture
"Gay-bashing = "Oh, they're just being conservative Christians, with a right to express their opinion. It's a free country, after all."" True expression.

"Jew-bashing = "What an outrage! This cannot be tolerated!!!!!"" False outrage so as to not appear as a raging bigot, as if being anti-gay were not bad enough.

12. I wonder if there's a connection with Shirley Phelps not appearing on Howard Stern for a few years
Her and her tow-headed brainwashed kids were on all the time for a while there. Probably more likely that they stopped taking them as guests when the Phelps started to saturate the rest of the mainstream media for far less interesting interviews with far worse hosts.

17. Phelps on Jews
From the Phelps "GodHatesFags.com" website.....

What do you think of Jews?

"For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God." Romans 2:28,29.

As the Apostle Paul (who himself was a Jew) teaches in this verse, the only true Jews are Christians. The rest of the people who claim to be Jews aren't, and they are nothing more than typical, impenitent sinners, who have no Lamb. You may have a Jewish heritage, but that doesn't make you a true Jew in the spirit; that only makes you a Jew in the flesh. As evidence of their apostasy, the vast majority of Jews support fags. In fact, it is the official policy of Reformed Jews to support same-sex marriage. Of course, there are Jews who still believe God's law, but most of them have even departed from that. It doesn't matter if you're a Jew or a Gentile...as long as you believe in Christ.

If you are a Jew in the flesh and not in the spirit, Paul describes you as follows: "The Jews: who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men" I Thessalonians 2:14,15.

So you see.... Jews aren't really Jews at all. Unless they're Christians. And hate gays. Just like God does.

Yeah.... makes perfect fucking sense, Fred. :eyes:

20. Well, at least he didn't refer to Jews are vermin that ought to be exterminated
but Phelps is well on his way to justify a second holocaust.
