I think the only way same sex couples are going to have marriage equality; is if more straight people stand up for them. Especially the elected Democrats. It seems to me that they haven't been as vocal as they should be. The Democrats need to be careful to not treat gays and lesbians like the republicans treat the Christian right, they use them to get votes, but ignore them after the election is over.
"Don't ask don't tell" is still in place and very few Democrats have been putting pressure on the President to change it. Are you happy with the way the Democrats have handled the same sex marriage issue and the "Don't ask don't tell" issue?
Democrats MUST turn the same sex marriage issue into a civil rights issue. They should ask the question If gays and lesbians pay their taxes and abide by the law, why can’t they have the same rights as everyone else when it comes to their pursuit of happiness?
They need to remind people that arguments being used by folks on the right are the same arguments that bigots used against interracial marriage.
They need to tell people that we cannot allow our fellow Americans to be discriminated against. We must approach this fight the same way good people of every race, every gender and every religion approached the Civil Rights fight in the 60's.
