I just found out today that there is a facebook group dedicated to being against the GSA I advise
It was a shock to me. I searched for the facebook group for that GSA and this one came up as a link. Amazing that people would actually take the time to do that.
I advise a GSA at our hs and I know what it would mean to our kids to find such a page. Does the admin support your GSA? If so, maybe you could use this as the starting point of a dialogue??? Best wishes to you and the kids. :)
and/or use the other group as a testament to the impact you are having. We only attack a group of people when we see them as being powerful in some way.
No matter what you stand for people are always going to be allied against you. The best way to deal with that is to meet them head on.
Now how do you tell them? You could do one of two things. Depending on how you think the students in your care would respond you could ignore it. When one of your students brings it up (and someone inevitably will) you could respond in some nonchalant yes-I've-seen-it-but-look-how-much-I-don't-care-about-it-and-am-more-importantly-not-afraid-of-it-and-you-shouldn't-be-either kind of way.
Or you could bring your students together and tell them right out and emphasize that no matter what the world throws at you, you can lean on your friends and the people in your community to get through. I happen to believe that the fact that our ideas will be challenged is something that's important for us to learn. Even when the other side is so obviously wrong.
I can't help but wonder if the kids already know. I continue to be amazed at the speed "knowledge" ( read: gossip) is spread and shared in this generation!!
