Hate group Westboro Baptist Church to picket lesbian teen Constance McMillen's graduation
A Mississippi lesbian who was denied the chance to go to her school's prom is now being targeted by a Kansas-based hate group - and it is going to protest at her graduation.

The Westboro Baptist Church, which has drawn jeers for picketing at soldiers' funerals and on Tuesday cheered the deaths of 12 tornado victims in Mississippi, said in a statement last weekend that they will be on hand for Constance McMillen's high school graduation ceremony, the Advocate reported.

"(We) will picket the graduation of Itawamba Agricultural High School to remind the parents, teachers and students of this nation that God said 'Thou shall not lie with mankind, as with womankind, it is abomination,'" the group declared.

McMillen fought a legal battle with her Fulton, Miss., high school after it refused to allow her to attend the prom with her girlfriend. In response to the fight, the school then decided to cancel the prom.

She won in court after the judge found that the school had violated her freedom of expression, but did not force the school to reinstate the classic high school event.

McMillen then attended a privately held prom, but said afterward that the one she went to was actually a "fake," while most of the rest of her classmates attended another prom she wasn't told about.

The 18-year-old received national attention for her battle with the Itawamba County School District. She received a $30,000 scholarship from Tonic.com, a digital media company, during an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in March.

McMillen has also been invited to take part in New York City's Gay Pride Parade through Greenwich Village in June.

5. I Suspect the School and Town Will Be Much More Comfortable With Phelps Than With Constance.

Whatever happens, they will blame it on her, regardless.

3. I would just skip the ceremony
Or better yet, tell the school she will be attending and then skip town on graduation day, as a sort of payback for the fake prom stunt.

You don't need to go to commencement to get your diploma; I have many friends who just blew it off and got their diploma in the mail.

4. That's rich.

You'd think the phelps' would be there to applaud the actions of the school.

Q3JR4.
Which is not to say that anyone comes close to the westburro baptist's activities. You do have to see a striking similarity to the way both groups have treated Constance thus far, though.

8. That could be very interesting.
The folks from Fulton, especially the high-school students and other younger people, would be horrified to some extent on their first contact with the Westboro inbreds, newly arrived to ruin the party. It might give them some pause about their own recent behaviour.

And it would be nice if the meeting turned out like Godzilla vs Mothra.

13. I'd go to the graduation just to piss off those protesters if I were her
Edited on Sat May-15-10 09:36 AM by ShadowLiberal
I really don't see how much damage a group of protesters can do at a school graduation, I mean for one thing aren't there laws that when school is in session (which I assume this counts as) that you can't stage a protest within something like a mile of the school? I know there's a limit to how close you can get because you can't disturb the school during school hours with your loud protest right next door.

Besides, a situation like this reminds me of the little rock nine, Ernest Green didn't cower away from his high school graduation despite the protesters, and neither should Constance McMillen.

14. This crosses way over the line of free speech IMO. If this country eventually

turns to a country of hatred across the board there will be many saying WTF. IMO too much outright cruel hatred is embraced in this country as freedom of speech.
