The same-sex partners of staff and faculty at the University of Florida would be eligible for health insurance benefits under a proposal to be presented to trustees later this week.

If the plan is approved it would go into effect in February.

Kyle Cavanaugh, UF's vice president of human resources, said that providing benefits to the partners of gay workers is crucial to the universities ability to hire the best staff.

"The primary reason for this is competing on a national basis," Cavanaugh told the Gainesville Sun.
