Calif. Gay Marriage Foes Said Unlikely To Get Prop On June Ballot
http://www.365gay.com/Newscon05/12/120505calAmend.htm

A group trying to get a proposed amendment to ban same-sex marriage put to voters in California concedes it won't make it on the June 2006 ballot and may not make it in November.

The amendment would not only prevent gay marriages but also void the state's landmark domestic partner registry and all benefits for same-sex couples.

Randy Thomasson, the president of Campaign for Children and Families, tells a chain of suburban newspapers that the gathering of names on petitions has been slow.

"Whether it be November 2006 or sometime in 2008, it doesn't matter," he told the MediaNews Group which operates some 30 small dailies in California.

1. But isn't support for same-sex marriage steadily rising nationwide?
If they're having trouble getting signatures for their anti-gay amendment now, then they'll have more trouble trying to get it on the ballot in 2008.

2. Wahhhhhh...
...We want our wedge issue! Without it, our "peeps" may have no reason to march in lockstep to the polls.

6. That immigration wedge drives me nuts!
I'm 47, and have lived in California all of my life. Things haven't changed yet, and they won't ... rich executives of huge California corporations will continue to bring illegals in so that they do not have to pay a fair wage. I want the illegals here treated with respect, and I want each resident to have access to medical care - particularly preventative medical care. Maybe we should put a nice tax on the bigger corporations who back illegal immigaration towards that end.

3. I expect this to be on the ballot next year.
They will certainly be able (not Thomasson's group, but the other one) get enough signatures for the November ballot. The only thing that will stop it is if Schwarzenegger threatens not to run if they put him on the spot like that. The GOP desperately needs him to run or it's 100% certain they lose the governorship. But these amendments would put Schwarzenegger in a VERY uncomfortable place. He could not possible endorse them.

5. It's great news that they are having trouble.
But I don't trust the statements these anti-gay obsessives put out.

I'm vice president of the local PFLAG, but I intend to support Equality California as well. Equality-minded-people always have to be prepared for their latest stunt. Jerks.

This retired social worker really wonders why Randy Thomasson is SO obsessed with gay couples. Hmmm ... wonder if he has issues of his own ...

7. Why not just put a pro-gay referendum on the ballot.....
....establishing the rights that come with a civil union for "any two consenting adults of legal age and residency" (but making no specific mention of the word "marriage"), so that those rights become officially protected within the California state constitution?

8. This is good
Because, otherwise, the immigrant communities will pass this with flying colors, as they did with Prop 22.

I will not stand by and watch idly while imported homophobia becomes the law of the land in California.
