Transsexual Cannot Become Crisis Center Councilor Court Rules
http://www.365gay.com/Newscon05/12/120705bcTS.htm

A Vancouver transsexual has lost the latest round in her battle with a women's group to become a volunteer rape counselor.

The British Columbia Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal by Kimberly Nixon to overturn her expulsion from Vancouver Rape Relief.

Gwendoline Allison, the lawyer for the women's group, says the decision essentially protects the right of Vancouver Rape Relief to choose its counselors.

Nixon, who was born biologically male but underwent a sex-change operation in 1990, was ejected from a training session for volunteer counselors when a staff member learned she had not always been biologically female.

2. So was being trans the only reason?
It sounds very un-Canadian.

4. I know
Sounds more like some immigrant ghetto in Los Angeles.

Or is it that Vancouver has soaked up too many Third World homophobic immigrants itself?

5. I don't get it.....
When I lived in Vancouver I took a female friend to to a women's shelter and we were told not to tell any man where it was located. hat makes sense.

Are they thinking that this woman may have some guy friends she would tell? Or is her voice to deep and would freak out a caller to the help line?

The immigrants Vancouver is soaking up are more interested in who gets what in the pot/hard drug manufacturing and distribution that gays.

3. This is especially disappointing seeing as it's Vancouver....
...I don't understand the reasoning behind this.

6. Where does a non-bio-female go for rape and abuse counseling?
Damn. Where does this leave victims? It's not like anyone's opened up a domestic violence or rape crisis center for men, or for transwomen, or for transmen. Given what a huge problem violence and rape is for transpeople, where does this leave a very vulnerable set of people?

7. The world wants us to die
The straight and gay worlds both wish we didn't exist.

They love us for the gawk and kink factor and to feel superior but when it comes to standing with us they just fail to care.

What was the GENDER IDENTITY of who threw the shoe that started stonewall riot?

8. The shoe heard round the world... and where do I go?
The shoe heard round the world... that started a revolution... :-) Damn good point.

Just tonight it came up with a friend - not shoe-chucking ladies who just can't take it any more, but the issue of where do I go if things get hard? I am facing a divorce that has a nonzero chance of turning ugly. If I hear those words "if I can't have you, nobody can" or any of those other red flag words, where do I go? Can I go to a women's shelter if I think something bad will happen, and then, only because I don't pass as male? Can I go, but if I come out as trans, expect to get thrown to the wolves? Where would I go if I were a bio male, to get away from a partner gone batshit?

This is serious. I don't actually believe anything bad is going to happen, but the people bad things happen to often don't see it coming. What if this is one of those cases? Where am I supposed to go?

10. Auntie
I really worry about this too.

I get so pissed off at the gay community because of this ignoring of trans issues. However some gay places of support ARE more aware of gender issues than others. Here in Baltimore there are some VERY safe and wonderful places to find support .There are even restaurants with GENDER NEUTRAL BATHROOMS here. And they make a 4 inch thick layered mousse cake that is LETHAL.

Anyways IF you have serious problems Let me know Immediately .. I can talk to folks at place I worked with, before..Hearts and Ears. This place specializes in helping GBLT's with mental illness, addictions, with domestic abuse issues. H&E does advocacy to shelters, universities, the public, mental hospitals etc. They deal with the real problems facing real people too The have support groups social activities, and a drop in center..The place is chock full of members who are trannies and trans advocates.(I was one of 'em for a year,I traveled everyfuckingwhere doing panels and conventions and education of clasees in schools.I even went to colorado for a conference called alternatives which is a big nationwide meeting of psych advocates and consumer/survivors/madpride.).So I am pretty certainI will be able to hook you up with some decent support or at least get you some contacts who could help you out for real who are not trans phobic or thick as molasses in january about gender issues...

PM or write me when you need help ..And I will get the ball moving at your word. Ok?

14. Oh, please.
The straight and gay worlds both wish we didn't exist.

They love us for the gawk and kink factor and to feel superior but when it comes to standing with us they just fail to care.
There's no point in trying to convince you how wrong you are, but I will tell you this: Such sweeping, unfair generalizations make it incredibly difficult for me to lend support to the individual who makes such statements.

I care very much about transgendered people -- but I won't give you a free pass on your damning statements about lesbians and gay men just because you're transgendered. You want to be treated just like everyone else? Fine -- then you neither deserve nor will receive the kid-glove treatment. It's a level playing field for everybody -- and if a gay man ever posted that kind of crap about lesbians ("Lesbians are manhaters! They want to kill all men!"), I'd be on his case like white on rice.

For chrissakes, if you want to feel so hated and degraded, go ahead. But your perception is both skewed and self-defeating. You keep asking how to "fix" transphobia by working on the problem together, while simultaneously -- and repeatedly -- painting lesbians and gay men as your enemies.

Yeah, that's really fostering a sense of empathy in me and a willingness to work with you. :eyes:

If you had hoped to find someone who acknowledges transphobia as a very real problem and would like to work toward ending it, you've found that in me.

But before I'm willing to address transphobia as it affects you, you're going to have to deal with your own homophobia first.

You don't even see how you're alienating the very people who might have been willing to work with you on this, do you?

15. Umm you might be cool sapphocrat
But some people do kill us.

http://www.gentlespirit.org/trans.htm

Every month of every year at least 1 trans person is murdered for not being a "proper gender" as in one or the other.
I have been treated like shit before because I was trans plenty of times. Like when a gay guy was attracted to me and asked if I wanted to get to know him better etc. So I wanted to be fair to him and I told him I was not a guy yet and he want on a fish tirade. It was awful.

Sapphocrat please I am not damming all gays here. That seems to be a trend If I say ANYTHING critical I am all of a sudden a bigot, and this defensiveness gets old fast ok.. I am speaking of things I have seen straight and gay people both do to trans people about how trans people get rejected so quick and are the butt of jokes I see it I hear it around .My transfriends get rocks thrown at them on their way home. You have to understand it is dangerous to be transgender in this world,Gay people are beginning to understand. I KNOW Not _ALL_people do this shit to trans people but SOME do, and yes Some people even want us dead and they can be straight or gay. That's reality.

13. This is just really sad!
By all counts regardless of the "equiptment" Nixon was born with, she is very much a woman. And a woman who wants nothing more than to help other women who have been traumatized by rape.

I am truly sickened by this.
