Gay Solider Fears For Life From Fellow Troops
http://www.365gay.com/Newscon05/12/121905soldier.htm

A soldier says he has requested a discharge from the military after his sexual orientation made him a target for attacks.

Private Kyle Lawson says he was punched in the face by a fellow member of a training unit at Fort Huachuca at an off-post party in October after a friend let it slip that Lawson was gay.
The soldier accused of hitting Lawson told police that Lawson made sexually suggestive remarks.

The Sierra Vista police officer who investigated the case says "there was no provocation."

4. too bad there can't be a reverse homophobic rapture,
where every contribution to society made by GLBTs is suddenly unavailable to the homophobes, all of the great works of art and literature, the huge strides in medicine and law, design, culinary achievments, warfare and military science, all of it, just dissappears from their ugly little world for a month or a week. i wonder how they would react? fun to think about anyhow.

5. Bastards.
Why is it, every time we are attacked by straights and they risk being held accountable that they lie and claim that we made a pass at them? Even if it were true, it is completely ridiculous. I think every straight woman should carry a knife everywhere she goes, and every time a man makes a pass at her she could try and kill him. Then, when confronted, she can just say "Oh, he made a sexually suggestive remark. I... I just snapped." The woman would be laughed out of a courtroom, but for some reason it seems to be a reasonable excuse for attacking gays.

7. Not just "reasonable"...
...but I think some states actually have a legal defense based on such an excuse. I wouldn't think it would ever hold up today, (Please tell me we have evolved enough as a society that this be true...) but one could certainly imagine it being used successfully even as recently as 20 years ago.

Egad.

6. Will someone please explain...
...what is defective with our culture that allows/encourages/tolerates this sort of nonsense?

The Brits (and a few other European nations, too I think) have had openly gay men and women serving in their military for quite a few years now and I think this sort of behavior is unknown there. No death threats, no attacks, no insecure-with-their-own-sexuality Rambotitos eager to punch their brothers-in-arms in a fit of homophobic (and perhaps self-loathing? Hmmmmmm.) terror. (Or am I wrong here?)

I mean....:wtf:

9. The Europeans have better leadership
Of course, they still have racial issues at some of the Army bases. Asking the leadership to insist that they will not put up with homophobic bullcrap is a bit much.
