'Brokeback' showdown!
— added 12/19, 1:29 p.m.

The second weekend tally is in, and it looks like "Brokeback Mountain" is well on its way to match its critical acclaim with audience appeal. In its first weekend in broader release, the unusual Western love story — don't call it "the gay cowboy movie," says everyone associated with it — pulled in $2.4 million playing in just 69 theaters.

Who'll win the 'Brokeback' duel? Kevin Naff, who says the film will find as much success with moviegoers as it has with critics? Or Matt Hennie, who predicts a flop in red-state America?

<snip>

There was only one way to resolve this standoff: a duel. Hennie and Naff have agreed to a public wager, but one with a bit more flair than your typical big-city mayors betting on their city's World Series teams. Their publisher will purchase a pair of chaps as the prize, and the loser has to wear them (with pants, please) "in and out" of the office for an entire day before turning them over to the winner.

So far, it looks like Naff made the better bet. The film's second weekend was just about as auspicious as its first. Twenty more cities and a total of 69 theaters brought in another $2.4 million, breaking "Brokeback" into the Top 10 nationally, at No. 8. That ranking is even more impressive when you consider than no other movie in the Top 10 was showing in fewer than 1,000 theaters. And it still ranks in the Top 10 ever for per-screen revenue.

1. Well here's one red-stater who can't wait until it gets anywhere near
her! Me and Mr. Rubyduby are dying to see it. So Matt Hennie can suck on that!

2. I don't think that it will play all that well in suburban cineplexes
in some areas but in the larger cities, the movie will take in the bucks

3. I just want it to do well enough...
...to keep Hollywood interested in doing more gay themed movies. The more the mainstream sees us the more they will become "desensitized" to gays and no longer picture us as a "threat". (As if we ever were.)
