amazon.com bias against gays in book searching
on the situation room (CNN), wolf talked about pro choice complaints that the search word "abortion" brought up "did you mean adoption?", but it had been changed by amazon.

well, I went and typed in homosexuality. WHO COMES UP #1 (hold on, I just spit up in my mouth)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=nb_ss_gw/103-2934157-6358205?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=homosexuality

there are far too many anti gay books on that first page, links on the side to being an ex-gay and this is the world's largest book seller site! Go down the first page and see how many anti-gay books there are? Like all but 1 or 2! Someone write the appropriate people, some of you are so well connected, you know who to contact in the GLBT community. I wrote Situationroom@cnn.com and told them.

love you all for your fighting so much crap every day just like me... JESUS loves me they can't steal that.

1. That word is too clinical, associated with pathology.
IMHO - try typing in "queer" - you get a much healthier range of choices.

Think about it - are you a homosexual or a gay man/lesbian? If you were searching for literature about yourself, you'd search for gay or maybe queer.

2. I wouldn't jump to that conclusion. "Homosexuality" is the term of choice
to describe same gender relationships by the wing nut crowd. In contrast, many gays or lesbians and people who support them will avoid using "homosexual" because there is much disagreement about precisely what the word means. I would expect any search engine to turn up more anti GLBT references than pro references when the keyword is "homosexual".

3. good points! thank you!
but sad to think when regular america clicks in about books about gays, a lot of people will type that and see so many negative books "a parents guide to preventing homosexuality" LOL>.. whatever!

good luck with all that!

4. What happens when you enter heterosexual?
Amazing how the right wing can grab a technical, clinical term, and turn in into a buzzword, a codeword, and a negative. They work so hard at that kind of nonsense, too--it boggles the mind....

5. It allows them to think they are being open and broad minded because they
aren't calling gays "faggots".

8. Well, I never really paid attention to the objection to the term before
but since I have seen it brought up here a time or two, it did cause me to recall how these fundies actually SAY the word. They put an odd cadence to it, and say each syllable like it is a separate word: "Ho - Mo - SEX-Yull" is about the way they phrase it.

You'd think they'd have better things to worry about than what someone does with their own fiddly bits....but hey, if they aren't overseeing the genitalia of others, they just aren't happy!!!

7. it is the fault of the programming, not the programmer
it links up words with no prior prejudice. It can't help it when other books come up first. It looks for same words and doesn't quite understand same words with different meanings.

Hey try looking for Queer in America : Sex, the Media, and the Closets of Power (Hardcover)
(link here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/067941309X/qid=1142893727/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-4426136-5866522?s=books&v=glance&n=283155)
