Oh God, please don't look at my naked body in the shower!!!
Yah know, I just saw some soldier on TV talking about the military ban on gay people.

This male, who appeared to be his early 20's, said he supports the ban because he doesn't want gay guys checking him out in the shower! Are you kidding me?!?!

I've spoken to a number of my STRAIGHT male friends about this whole shower issue and all but one admitted even they sneak a quick peak because they're curious about how they measure up. They even said they do the same at the urinal for the same reason.

Isn't this normal male behavior??

What just gets me about the military policy against gays is here you have these soldiers who are willing to dodge bullets, risk getting blown up by roadside explosive devices, risk the chance of being getting kidnapped and tortured.....

BUT when it comes to taking a shower, these brave, tough, macho soldiers all of a sudden become wusses at the thought of a gay guy getting a look at their junk

So what? Who cares? Are they afraid the gay guy is going to start dry humping them?? I just don't get it!!

With toilets & urinals lined up without privacy stalls, you'd think they were encouraging them to check each other out.

6. yes, they are.
this is my theory. Take a good, traditional, red-blooded american male (stereotype) he likely objectifies women in a big way, if a woman was in the shower with him, he'd be checking her out the entire time (especially a hot woman, and all GTRBAMs think that they, themselves, are hot, right?) so they treat the woman like a piece of meat. hey, I'm straight, and I check out attractive women all the time, it's habit, and I know it's a little wrong, and I feel a little guilty sometimes...

and they're afraid that the gay guy in the shower is doing the exact same thing to them.

45. I agree. This is where I think homophobia is rooted in sexism.
The idea galls het men that gay men could be looking at them the same way that they look at women. They confused being looked at "lustfully" with being looked at "as a woman". They also dislike lesbians because we intentionally repel their gaze (when butch) and covertly reject them (when femme-- and we simply confuse them if we are androgenous).

They are able to brave bullets and bombs but not boys in the bathroom because they would rather be dead then looked at the same way they look at women-- what does that tell you about how they look at women?

(Of course, gay men are not looking at them as "women" but as men! But they don't grasp this emotional logic.)

8. I have no idea about guys but women don't mind taking group showers.
I've showered at the YWCA and at college gyms. Gay, straight, old, young, single, married women share showers and locker rooms and no one has any problems with that. (I'm a straight woman.)

Maybe this is purely a straight male insecurity issue rather than a gay issue.

15. As a straight woman with gay friends,
I've thought about this for quite a while. Most little girls learn early to not put themselves into potentially dangerous situations -- don't go out alone after dark, don't dress too revealingly (though that one's changing ;-( ), keep an eye on that strange man in case he turns out to be a mad rapist. We learn how to disarm with a smile, change the subject if it's too uncomfortable, use body language to say no. We are prey and we learn how to behave to survive.

Men aren't taught that sort of behavior. And the thought that some other man might view them as prey, as an "object", like a woman is an "object", is probably terrifying.

You'll notice that you never hear of a straight woman afraid of being propositioned by a lesbian. We learn how to graciously turn someone down along with our ABCs.

Now flame away. I'll duck!

Welcome to the Hottie Zone. Little did Lerfish know, at the beginning of his day, that cracking wise would propel him to heights of attractiveness previously reserved for Rock Hudson and Brad Pitt. Lerkfish looked in the mirror that morning. Yup, still naked. Still disgusting. Still knocking a bird over dead who happened by the window and peeked in. Poor bird. Poor Mirror. Poor Lerkfish's wife.
Walking down the street on the way to work, a small magical gnome tapped his shin.
"hey there, big fello. I have a propo...EGADS!" Quickly the tiny creature shielded his eyes. Normally, X-ray vision has been a great feature of being magical, until today.
"Good blarney-like substance, man! Looking at you naked is like pouring lava in my eyes! It burns! It burns!"
Lerkfish, embarrassed, "If I'da known I was going to be running across a magical creature, I would have dressed in lead underwear. As it turns out, my lead underwear is at the cleaners...again."
"Well, that's alright, you seem a nice sort..."The gnome grinned, a little. "We like self-deprecating humor here in the magic realm. Except for Pauli Shore. Nobody thinks he's funny."
Lerkfish laughed. "Well, I see the nonmagical realm is in agreement on THAT!".
The gnome brightened as he had an idea. "SAY! I know! I'll cast a spell to make you a HOTTIE! Irresistable! Sought after!"
Lerkfish mentally pictured being swamped by Angelina Jolie, being smothered with kisses. and other things.
"OK! sounds great!"
the Gnome concentrated and waved his arm in a quasi-magical way.
Suddenly, Lerkfish was grabbed from behind and was being smothered with kisses. He thought he heard:
"I think you look FABULOUS naked! here, here's a deal-a-meal card. You've earned it, big boy!"
Lerkfish opened his eyes and saw Richard Simmons smiling at him adoringly.
"Oh well," Lerkfish shrugged. "I'm being chased by a celebrity. That's better than yesterday."

17. I read somewhere that it's quite common...
and even considered normal unconscious behavior for males to do this. It's cited in the popular psychology book "Manwatching: A field guide to human behavior" (yes, I know what the title sounds like) by Desmond Morris (link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0810913100/sr=8-1/qid=1142977094/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-7068357-4869457?%5Fencoding=UTF8). It's more of a power play; men would prefer to feel they are in control rather than possibly be the subject of an unwanted advance. It might do a lot of men good to understand what it feels like. They'd be more sympathetic toward women in the military who undergo sometimes daily sexual harrassment.

44. Here's something a straight friend of mine wrote in a letter once...
I have 2 friends who know each other, and one is straight (or claims to be) and the other is bisexual. The straight one is 46 and has never been married, while the bisexual one has been married twice and has no problem with anyone being straight or gay. The bi one wrote to me, letting me know that as part of their regular correspondence, the bi one wrote to the straight one a long letter which happened to include, "Even if you are gay, I'll still be your friend." The bi one wrote to me that the straight one wrote back to him saying, "Let me set the record straight (underlined that word) once and for all. I am not a dick sucking, butt fucking, hairy bun groping, sperm burping, cock breath blowers cramp skin flute playing hairy bag pipe blowing fucking faggot. Comprende you fucking wetback. Let's move on pal." I have never told the straight guy I found out he wrote that, and I never will. But I still keep that letter around for a laugh once and a while.

27. I'll never understand the straight male psyche.
Why is it that most straight men seem to think, that all gay men if they see them naked, will suddenly want to have sex with them? I find this odd and strange, and it seems to be a wide spread thing in heterosexual males, even the dog ugly ones that no self-respecting homo would touch with a ten foot pole, let alone their penis.

Will a gay guy probably see you naked? Yeah, he would. That doesn't mean he's going to try and rape you (although it'd probably do a few straight guys some good to have their brains fucked out - it might actually loosen them up.) The fact of the matter is, straight guys are looking at other guys as well. It's kinda hard not to when you are taking a shower with other people, unless of course you want to institute a rule where everyone must either shower with their eyes closed or staring directly at the floor. Better yet, you can't trust everyone - everyone must undress, shower and reclothe themselves completely blindfolded.

The fact of the matter is this: Once you've seen three or four penises you've pretty much seen them all. Some are short, some are long, some are fat, some are skinny, some are cut, some are uncut, some are showers and some are growers... and while I'm sure every guy is attached to their own penis (literally - one hopes), it doesn't necessarily make it special to anyone else.

If, in fact, a gay male were attracted to a straight male I don't see why he would get angry. Attraction is a sincere form of flattery, and if you tell said gay male that you were straight and weren't interested, if he has any sense in his head he should accept it and move on. If he tried to harass you, then sure - being a little harsher might be in order. If a woman were to be attracted to me I'd treat it the same way, and if a straight male were attracted to a lesbian she should treat it the same way as well.

The whole "shower" thing just reeks of insecurity on the straight males part. It leads me to believe that they are afraid that they might like the attention, and if they like it... well then that'd seriously screw with their head. It'd almost be funny if it wasn't so pathetically sad.

28. I remember debating this in college with
a homophobe in my religion and politics class. He went on and on about how gays only are interested in sex and would rape people in showers. So I asked him how many people were in his gym class in highschool (he said 25) and he had to take it for four years so we added 10 per year (to account for overlapping). Thus 55 men had seen him naked and not raped him. Then I did a little calculation. The probability all 55 of those men were straight was .9^55 which is .003043252722170453708637199325153. In other words the probability that at least one gay male had seen him naked and refrained from raping him was .997. (1 - the other figure). I said either he was unusually ugly, unusually lucky, or simply wrong about gays.

I thought the military taught self-defense and hand-to-hand combat, but apparently not if a bunch of straight guys are all worried about not being able to fend off the amorous advances of an admittedly out-numbered minority of horny homos in the shower. No wonder we got our butts kicked every time we've been to war since World War II! (Well, except for Reagan's invasion of Grenada ... but that was just a tiny island easily overran by our apparently under-trained military.)

went to The Gay 90's a local gay bar with their wives to see the drag show. They came into the office on Monday telling people how they had been groped by all the men in the bar.

Now in Minneapolis you can be the hottest thing on two legs and unless you are willing to walkup and initiate a conversation with someone you will never meet anyone. Must be the cool Norwiegan blood up here.

I went up to these assholes and said "Ya know I have been to the 90's a thousand times and never once has anyone laid a hand on me (unasked). And the fact that you both have beer bellies the size of Texas would indicate to me that you're making this shit up. We gays do have our standards." Mean I know but the assholes deserved it.

They sputtered some nonsense and went and sat down and that was the last I ever heard about the gropy homosexuals.

homophobia is a bizarre mystery to me. It never holds up to scrutiny.

"gay guys are gonna jump me in the shower!"
--"ok, so you don't think you could defend yourself against a rabid gay guy?"
