Gainesville judge hears lawsuit from school gay-straight alliance

Attorneys representing teens who fought to create a gay support club at White County High School in Cleveland argued their case June 12 before a federal judge in Gainesville, Ga.

A ruling is not expected for several weeks, according to the ACLU of Georgia, which filed the federal lawsuit against the White County school system in north Georgia, alleging high school administrators violated the federal Equal Access Act last year by banning all non-curricular school clubs as a way to keep out a gay-straight alliance.

Gould also said that despite the school claiming that all noncurricular clubs were prohibited, she heard announcements on the high school public address system for other clubs, including a shotgun club.

"How can you allow a shotgun club, with Columbine in the back of our minds, and not allow an antibullying club?" Gould said under questioning from ACLU attorney Beth Littrell.
