White Sox manager apologizes for 'fag' remark
Outspoken Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen apologized Wednesday for using a derogatory term in referring to Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti, then kept up his criticism of the writer.

Guillen went into a profanity-laced tirade against Mariotti before Tuesday night's game against St. Louis and called him a number of names, including a "fag."

Before Wednesday night's game, Guillen acknowledged that his use of the word might have offended some. "I shouldn't have mentioned the name that was mentioned, but I'm not going to back off of Jay," Guillen said, using another profanity to describe Mariotti.

"The word I used, I should have used something different. A lot of people's feelings were hurt and I didn't mean it that way."

So he's essentially saying that he's not sorry for saying what he said, he's just sorry that some people took offense to it? :eyes: :puke:

1. still waiting for the fine...
If Guillen gets out of this without a fine or suspension, it makes it perfectly clear where baseball stands on diversity.

9. He was fined an "undiscloed" amount of $$
'"On Tuesday night, Ozzie Guillen used language that is offensive and completely unacceptable," commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. "Baseball is a social institution with responsibility to set appropriate tone and example. Conduct or language that reflects otherwise will not be tolerated. The use of slurs embarrasses the individual, the club and the game."'

'"Jay (Mariotti, the reporter he columnist), I think I made this guy a lot of money and he's famous. If not for Ozzie Guillen, no one would have heard of him," Guillen said. "If I hurt anybody with what I called him, I apologize."'

'Guillen also told Couch that he has gay friends, attends WNBA games, went to a Madonna concert and plans to go to the Gay Games in Chicago.'

'Guillen said that in his native Venezuela, that word is not a reference to a person's sexuality, but to his courage. He said he was saying that Mariotti is "not man enough to meet me and talk about .'''

Man, what an moronic, egotistical ass. He gives Latino men a bad name. (He blamed his language on his country of origin, Venezuela.)

ps. That Allentown PA paper could take a few lessons from the Chicago Sun-Times. See DU/GLBT thread: Reporter Disciplined For Participating In Gay Pride Parade

He didn't mean it that way -- sure he didn't. And people wonder why players of team sports wait until retirement to come out. Gee, I wonder.

3. That's the standard "non-apology apology"
No, he couldn't have actually said "I'm sorry I used a disgusting homophobic term that slurs gay people. I apologize to the gay community for using this derogatory term".

So, therefore, Ozzie Guillen is an homophobic asshole.

5. Exactly.
If he were throwing around slurs against any other minority, he would absolutely be fined and suspended. Case in point: Marge Schott.

Homophobia is the last (hopefully) form of acceptable bigotry in our society. If he gets away with this unscathed, then I think that will be very telling of how tolerant of homophobia Major League Baseball is.

7. I just hope that the gay and lesbian people of Chicago boycott this event:
There's a Gay Games Night at US Cellular Field in (the home of the Chicago White Sox) next month. Given this asshole's homophobic attitudes, anything the White Sox would recognize as gay is sort of pointless now, I think.

8. Do the White Sox own that stadium?
In many cases those stadia are built with public money and thus the Sox might have nothing to do with the event.

10. but the baseball commissioner has fined him
I'll give him props for doing that

I think that Gay Games Night will really give the White Sox the opportunity for a very public apology
