Romney: Vote To Ban Gay Marriage 'Democracy'
http://www.365gay.com/Newscon06/06/062806romney.htm

Massachusetts Republican Gov. Mitt Romney, renewing his support for a ballot question banning gay marriage, said Wednesday it's the job of voters - not the courts or lawmakers - to define what constitutes a civil right.

"Who's going to tell us what a civil right is and what's not? Well, the people will," Romney said in calling on lawmakers to allow a vote on a proposed amendment to the Massachusetts constitution that would ban same-sex marriage. The State House vote is scheduled for July 12.

Supporters have long cast same-sex marriage as a civil right that should not be subject to a popular vote, likening it to the desegregation battles of the 1950s and 1960s, where the courts played a central role in expanding rights for blacks.

Yet Romney, during a news conference attended by Cardinal Sean O'Malley and other religious and civil leaders, said that in a democracy, nothing is off-limits to voters, even the definition of civil rights.

wonder how Romney would feel if the voters of some state decided to turn back the clock on civil rights for racial minorities?

1. I'd hate to have the legalization of slavery on the ballot here in
Mississippi since its the job of the voters to decide what is a civil right. romney, you should be very proud of your hateful heart.

2. With all this happening, I had a thought a few months ago ...

since Romney is a Mormon, use similar language to the ban on same-sex marriage to deny "special rights" to Latter Day Saints (I would NOT support this if it actually appeared on a ballot).

Get the petitions with the signatures and have them submitted at the same time. He would be a hypocrite if he didn't let both go through and see how he feels to have people marginalize you for who you are.

3. I can hardly wait until he is no longer the governor.
The depth of my feelings against this man is so harsh. I hate him as much as I hate bush.

4. Unmitigated, lying bastard. Mitt the Shitt. BEGONE!
I cannot stand that nitwit. My lovely state will be so much better off when he is back in Utah.

Sorry, Utah folks, but self-preservation is the first law...!

5. well Mitt Romney is certainly no expert on Democracy
but then again he's telling his base what they want to hear, not speaking to us.

And by us I mean the whole rest of the developed world who disagrees with him.

8. I'd like to ask Romney a question!
In the 2 years that gay people have been getting married in Mass., I'd like him to give me ONE example of something bad that has happened as a result. Hmmm? What's that I hear? Crickets??? All these rightwing asshats are the same.... they can't give you one specific example of how gay marriage will undermine "traditional" marriage. They just spew talking points.

9. Someone in Mass please enlighten me..
How in the HELL did this boob get elected governor in the bluest of the blue states? Was there some scandal attached to the Dem candidate? Did a third-party candidate split the vote? Were there electronic voting machines?? I just can't understand it! I visited your fair state last week! I thought I smelled something... must have been Mitt the Shitt!

10. democracy 101
A majority vote is not a "democracy". A democracy is a representative vote that protects the rights of the minority from being taken away by a the votes of a majority.

So Mitt's call to take it to the people is a call to mob violence to "smear the queers". Nice. I remember that game - played by stupid thoughtless kids. It IS the ultimate outcome of hatred, words, and manipulation of a "majority".

11. I'm absolutely convinced that Romney has some sort of learning
disability.

He's definitely a racist IMO, but I think he has greater issues than that.

12. The boil on the butt
I just cannot wait to be rid of Romney. What a relatively wonderful state we have here-- Massachusetts. We need to rid ourselves of these regressive politicians, and force the Church and its pawns (including O'Malley) back into their pews.

All progressives, gay or not, need to work hard to marginalize the Christo-fascists until they are totally irrelevant in Commonwealth politics and civil issues.

In the history of this country, the majority has *ultimately* never decided the civil rights of minorities. Where did Romney to school, anyway? What a clown-- but a malevolent one!
