A New York State Appeals Court today hears arguments in the case of a man denied compensation following the death of his longtime partner in an air crash.

Joe Lopes, was killed on November 12, 2001, while working as a flight attendant on American Airlines flight 587 when it crashed shortly after takeoff from John F. Kennedy Airport.

His surviving spouse, Bill Valentine, was turned down when he applied for workers' compensation benefits given to people whose spouses die on the job.

Of course they don't have to tell me this before I croak, which means that I would have violated whatever law allows them to get away with that by designating my partner in the first place.

Then when he sues, they'll merely refund the premiums and call it a day.

This really is a big deal especially when there are millions involved.

I am actually having them sign a binding letter to the effect that the designation of beneficiary supercedes any contravening state or federal law that would serve to remove his rights.

If they refuse, I'll be suing their asses while I'm alive, which I intend to be for quite a while anyway.
