My students' GSA met today for the first time
Edited on Tue Jan-29-08 06:29 PM by dsc
We had about 10 students show. Mostly gay, but one straight. I am so proud of these kids. They are fierce. I will never cease to be amazed at the raw courage of some kids. We should have several more next week as we had some publication problems. In the shadow of Jesse Helms, having a GSA. I can't wait for some activism.

On edit. I am still sort of stunned and almost cried on my trip home. Part of me is trying to pay forward something I would have loved to have as a kid. I have had a Hell of a semester and a Hell of a 40th year.

7. This so makes me smile this evening!
GSA's make such a huge difference in the lives of those who involve themselves, not only the kids. They are lucky to have you there and you are lucky to have 10 whole students show. Wow, that is great.

41 has to be better. 41 is a good year. Promise.

8. Honestly, it has been a year of growth
Edited on Tue Jan-29-08 07:10 PM by dsc
I didn't really mean to start coming out but I can't say I am sorry for that. The gang fight I could do without but I survived. Truth be known, part of me is tempted to just come out to my students and be done with it. If I had tenure I probably would. But no tenure and not being good enough to be first, makes me a little afraid.

11. And there it is.
The fear of losing your job because of who you are. Does it get any more blatant than that? I have a friend in the same position in a university job.

Yes, it does sound like a year of growth but lets hope it continues next year but with a little less crisis.

12. Yeah true that
The kids in this group know of course, it would be fairly hypocritical not to be with them. But we have the 'fight club' code. But, let's face it. The fifth amendment answer, which is what I do, is all but a tacit admission in any case.

18. Good job
High School GSA's are critical to gay youth, and you've been instrumental in creating this one. Good luck to you and to your GSA!!

19. Fierce hey...
lol... that reminded me of Christian on Project Runway.

Good for you dsc, you make me proud as a 40ish gay man. While they came to you, it shows that they see something in you that made it possible for them to approach you.

Again Congrats

Jella

though I am, sadly, old enough to be his father (yikes). Thanks for the kind words.

21. Thank you and thank your students
for providing a safe GLBT environment and helping to open more minds. I sure would have benefited from such a group.

22. Yeah I can so relate
but to the student's credit, they created this, not teachers. Maybe if we had asked back then, we could have had it too.

23. Congratulations. You will probably never know how big of a day it was for the students.
I imagine that each one will carry that first moment with them the rest of their lives. You made a difference that can't be measured with words or charts or stats.

And it will only multiply from there, dsc.

You extended the worth of self and the promise of dignity denied.

I am very, very proud of you. No one can ever take that away from you.

DZ

24. they are doing the work
I am totally in awe of them for being open at their age. Admittedly I would have killed for this back in the day but sometimes living a good third act is the best revenge.

25. Awesome!
Wish we would've had GSAs when I was in high school in the early late 60s-early 70s. How different my HS years might have been!

Keep up the good work, and I'm proud of you and the kids, too! :hi:
