Gays not civil rights victims, U of Toledo administrator argues

A University of Toledo administrator is on paid leave because of an article she wrote for Toledo Free Press in April, reports News 11's Shelley Brown.

Crystal Dixon, UT's associate vice president of human resources, had responded to a column about the gay rights struggle, saying "As a Black woman ... I take great umbrage at the notion that those choosing the homosexual lifestyle are civil rights victims. I cannot wake up tomorrow and not be a Black woman. Daily thousands of homosexuals make a life decision to leave the gay lifestyle."

Equality Toledo, a local gay rights organization, is calling Dixon's comments outrageous.

"The problem for me is that this is somebody that is charge of a major department of a major institution," says Rob Salem, UT clinical law professor and board member of Equality Toledo. "She talks about .... homosexuality being a choice. And those views are refuted by the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association."

Howard Dean squealed on her in the DNC vs Gay employee deposition. Donna didn't want the Gays treated as civil rights issues, because somehow or other the AA Community would be offended. Maybe someone can direct you better.

I don't believe for one second that being heterosexual or homosexual is a "choice". About the only choice I have is to either live a lie and pretend to live up to the "norm", or be true to myself and be who I am.. which is a gay male. But, just for arguments sake.. even IF being gay was a choice, I still don't see how that would disqualify it as a civil rights issue, being that freedom of choice is supposed to be one of the foundation principles of freedom in this country to begin with.

All it does is splinter the civil rights movement because honestly I'm about done trying to fight for equal rights for people that want to deny mine. Bitter? Maybe, but, well, as you reap, so shall you sow.
