Looking for a nice, solid exercise regimen.
Preferably one that starts pretty easy, and ramps it up a tad each week. Mainly calisthenic/light dumbbell type stuff.

Any links or advice would be greatly appreciated.

1. Are there any exercise programs for the elderly?
This is a good post, we do not need to lose weight.

2. All you need to do is walk
Start with a half mile eaching morning or evening and work up to 5 miles a day. You will never need exercise equipment, dumbells or any other type of exericse.

6. It doesn't do cardio and takes a lot of time. Some areas just aren't good for walking. nt

8. Yeah, I started that in January. Started at 1.5 miles and am now up
to 5.5 miles daily. Well, actually 5.48 (I measured with a GPS receiver). It was good for the first few months (I've dropped 24 pounds), but I'm looking for a little extra now.

3. I bought an Elliptical Trainer
Edited on Sun May-03-09 07:44 AM by cosmik debris
And within three weeks my blood pressure was back to normal. My weight has been steadily declining--slowly but in a healthy manner.

I also use 5 lb hand weights (cheap at Target) for strengthening my arms and shoulders. And I do a lot of toe touches and lower back stretches (gently).

That's what works for me. But don't buy it if you aren't going to use it. It takes up too much space.

As much as I hated high school gym class, it taught me a lot of stuff that has served me well as a senior citizen.

DU also has an Exercise and Fitness group. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=295

You might check in there.

7. They are also great for weight loss and cardio work outs.
I did not know what the OP needed, so I just shared my experience.

9. Hey Cosmik, I was thinking of buying a used ell. trainer off Craig's
but knowing me it would end up holding clothes.

:P

Thanks for the link to the E&F group! I thought I had seen that one before but couldn't find it last night (I had just gotten off work and wasn't thinking clearly).

4. A rowing machine. It does everything, is no impact and is only as stressful
as you want it to be.

Check out doing it correctly - big muscles to small muscles on the pull and the opposite on the recovery.

10. We ride our bikes
several miles, as close to daily, as a person can get up here in the Pacific Northwest - down in So. Cal, where we're trailer trash in the winter - and it's been life-changing. We've BOTH lost weight and according to the docs, are in pretty good shape, tho I'm afraid to EVEN put that into words. But if climate permits, it's a GREAT form of exercise, gets another car off the road....sometimes.....and gets a person to places where we used to only drive. We are REALLY cautious about traffic - we never insist on bike "right-of-ways." We ALWAYS defer to vehicular traffic, but even so, this has turned into a fun way to exercise, and our cairn terrier rides along with us in a box on the back of the old man's bike. We've also crossed paths with lots of delightful folks. Ms Bigmack

11. Start slowly
aim for 20 minutes 3x/week then work your way up, adding five minutes each week.

When you really start feeling energetic, at a 4th time/week, then 5.

Work your way up to 30 minutes/day and then 45, then an hour.

Walking is probably the best to start out with. All you need is a sidewalk and a good pair of tennis shoes. Oh, and an mp3 player. Music really helps.
