I have a new idea about how to increase weight loss
Surely by now most have heard about the "miracle fruit" that alters the taste buds so that acidic/sour things taste sweet.

Well, I got some and tested it several months ago, and yes, it works as advertised, however, I personally did not like the effect.

In fact, for the hours that the effect lasted, I found myself avoiding all food because of the sickeningly sweet taste it added. And sweets? Forget it! Yuck!

I've noticed that some, such as Omar Cantu of Moto restaurant, are experimenting with using the extract to enhance the flavor of foods that are widespread but not tasty (eg, some weeds), in an effort to address world hunger. Eh, maybe. Although I'd think if I were starving, I'd eat anything even if it didn't taste so good.

Then there's the opposite approach to consider, finding something that does the opposite to taste buds, make everything taste really crappy to curb people's food intake.

What do you think?

2. damn you for making me go to wikipedia!
And how embarrassed should I be, being a huge Kubrick fan?

It's not quite the same though, since there's no long lasting effect, it's only for the period where the taste buds are affected.

3. you are right`
except maybe there would be a long lasting effect if you did it enough times

have enough "bad experiences" with food X, and even if it now tastes good, you might not be able to go against the pscyhological revulsion in the future

but you are right, it's a mediocre analogy.

otoh, any chance to pimp kubrick is good for me!
:)

6. Good point. Like, if you raised your kid using this stuff
Raise them with an aversion towards certain foods. Haha, maybe before every fast food meal or something.

Hey, we could be on to something here...

All hail Stanley Kubrick! :hi:

14. Nope, I checked the ingredient list, no bullshit
Plus, I know for a fact that it works as advertised. It's a simple matter of a glycoprotein that binds to certain taste bud receptors.

17. Fine, then you understand why I don't believe in miracles.
I'm not saying nobody should try your stuff, but one ought not be surprised if it doesn't do anything noticeable for them.

18. You win, you are more cynical than I am
And I didn't think it was possible, but there it is.

Using the word "miracle" does not, in itself, invalidate a claim.

Frankly I'd be surprised if you tried it and found no effect. In fact, *that* would be more of a miracle, imho.

19. The claim of "miracle" is in and of itself horseshit.
Edited on Thu Apr-15-10 06:38 PM by bemildred
I'm not passing any judgement on your claim, it is just a claim. The world is full of claims, yours is as good as any. If you want to suggest that interested and adventurous people try it out, I'm OK with that.

21. You will be dismayed to learn that they've named the active compound "miraculin"
It's true.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miraculin

Miraculin is a glycoprotein extracted from the fruit of the miracle fruit plant (Synsepalum dulcificum or Richadella dulcifica). The berry, which contains active polyphenols, was first documented by explorer Chevalier des Marchais, who searched for many different fruits during a 1725 excursion to its native West Africa.

Miraculin itself is not sweet. However, after the taste buds are exposed to miraculin, ordinarily sour foods, such as citrus, are perceived as sweet. This effect lasts up to an hour.

The active substance, isolated by Prof. Kenzo Kurihara, a Japanese scientist, was named miraculin after the miracle fruit when Kurihara published his work in Science in 1968.

23. Something like "unobtainium" I guess.
Whooo, "active polyphenols".

I'm all in favor of good nutrition and herbal pharmaceuticals, but I expect them to help, not perform miracles.
