DNA database for kids planned

Several U.S. hospitals plan to set up a database of children to help in the study obesity and other juvenile problems, but the plans worry some.

The research will seek answers to such questions as why some children become obese when they eat junk food while others don't, or which kids are more prone to asthma, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Among the institutions in the effort is the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the nation's oldest pediatric medical center. Its $40 million plan will collect and analyze detailed DNA profiles on as many as 100,000 of its child patients, reports the Journal.

The plan will take advantage of new DNA-decoding methods that may help scientists identify the genes that put people at risk for common diseases.
