One more example of a simple sugar affecting Alzheimer's
disease..... they are finally finding out that nature has provided most of what we didn't know we needed.

A Sweet Solution to Alzheimer's Disease?

Certain variants of a simple sugar ameliorate Alzheimer's-like disease in mice, according to a new study by Canadian researchers. Although the new studies are still in the early stages, the findings could lead to new therapies that prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

The new studies show that some types of a sugar called cyclohexanehexol—also known as inositol—prevented the accumulation of amyloid β deposits, a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. Scyllo-inositol treatment also improved cognitive abilities in the mice and allowed them to live a normal lifetime. The study appeared in advance online publication of the journal Nature Medicine on June 11, 2006.

1. Coke dealers cut their product with inositol years ago
to the point that health food stores had to start locking the stuff up because they'd steal it in the early 80s.

We always knew when a new shipment was in town because those half kilogram jars of inositol powder would FLY off the shelves.

I guess all those yuppie cokeheads will never have to fear Alzheimer's.

3. cis - 1,2,3,5 - trans - 4,6 - cyclohexanehexol
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The structure of Inositol

Inositol, or cis-1,2,3,5-trans-4,6-cyclohexanehexol, is a cyclic polyalcohol that plays an important role as a second messenger in a cell, in the form of inositol phosphates. It is found in many foods, particularly in cereals with high bran content.

It is classified as a member of the vitamin B complex, though it is not considered a vitamin per se, since the human body can synthesize it.

4. A person who consumes a natural diet, who is so say, "healthy"

may not benefit from supplements. A person who has a genetic flaw or who has been damaged by a bacteria/virus may benefit greatly from various supplements, i.e. glyconutrients, which can trigger the release of a major amount of stem cells from the bone marrow whose job it is to find out where they are needed, including in the brain, as they are able to pass the blood/brain barrier.

OCD and INOSITOL

http://westsuffolkpsych.homestead.com/inositol.html

The article proved to be the convincer for us. We had a number of OCD patients, who were only getting partial relief from prescription antidepressants, so we decided to suggest the possibility of their trying inositol as an augmenting agent, in addition to what they were already taking. I should mention here that our clinic is a rather busy treatment center, and unfortunately, not really geared toward conducting research, so we really didn't collect any data on this. I know my learned colleagues will shake their heads at this, and they would be right. In any case, we started to see some positive results among approximately 50% of those who tried It. In most cases, these results ranged from at least mild to moderate relief of symptoms. A few reported even more improvement. We have generally built up our patients over a six-week period, starting with 1 teaspoon (2gms) twice per day, and going as high as 3 teaspoons, three times per day. It turned out that not everyone required the full 18 grams used in the Fux study. One person was seen to improve on just 2 grams daily.

ON EDIT: I should clarify the bacteria/virus thingy.

OCD Contagious?
We once thought stress caused ulcers; we now know that bacteria frequently do -- in people that are genetically prone. Similarly, we once thought that obsessive-compulsive disorder was strictly a mental problem; now mounting evidence suggests that strep infections can trigger OCD in those who are genetically prone, as reported in the December 27, 2000 issue of JAMA. When some children mount an immune response to attack the strep, this immune defense also attacks parts of the brain! The damage can be seen on MRI.

5. For those who need it
This is a GREAT supplement. In Israel a number of studies have been done using inositol, with OCD and all types of eating disorders. And yes, for awhile at GNC the powdered kind was behind the counter, and was very expensive (demand from the people using it for cutting Coke). In the USA, D-chiro inositol was tested for insulin resistance and then the drug was dropped for some reason. I think the company was Insmed (??) Interesting that Alzheimer's is associated with problems with insulin resistance.

IP3 (a different type of inositol) is beneficial for cancer.
