Coffee May Reduce Alcoholic Liver Disease
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/5071874.stm

A US study of 125,580 men and women over 20 years found a 22% reduced risk of developing alcoholic cirrhosis for each cup of coffee drank per day.

But tea was not associated with a reduced risk, indicating caffeine may not be the link, the study in Archives of Internal Medicine concluded.

.............snip................

Drinking less than one cup of coffee a day was found to reduce the risk of alcoholic cirrhosis by 30%; one to three cups by 40%; and four or more cups by 80%.

There was also a small but non-significant reduction in other forms of cirrhosis - not associated with alcohol - in coffee drinkers.

3. The operative word is "MAY"
Gotta be careful of those weasel words, folks.

An uncle of mine died of cirrhosis 3 years ago. He was also a coffee hound.

One grandfather died of cirrhosis when I was a baby. He was a coffee hound.

If you need more than one drink a night, you've got a problem. Coffee won't help. AA might.

4. Data
It appears that even if this is causual, and the data hold up, even with four cups of coffee, there is increased risk of cirrhosis with alcohol use. So coffee, even a lot of it, wouldn't save everybody.

Heavy drinkers should get liver enzymes checked--but people, be careful. I know someone whose brain was alcohol damaged (very obvious) and liver enzymes were perfect!!

Probably different people can tolerate different levels of alcohol. For some there may be zero tolerance.
