Veg{etables} 'prevents artery hardening' (BBC)
Eating vegetables may prevent hardening of the arteries, research suggests.

US researchers found 38% less build up of fatty deposits in the arteries of mice who were fed a mixture of vegetables, including carrots and peas.

Evidence on the effects of diet on atherosclerosis in humans is not clear but eating fruit and vegetables is known to protect against heart disease.

The study in the Journal of Nutrition said the average person only eats three portions of fruit and veg a day.

The researchers from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine assessed the effect of diet on heart disease by studying mice that had been specially bred to rapidly develop atherosclerosis - the formation of fatty plaques in the arteries which can eventually block blood flow leading to heart attacks and strokes.

1. Plant based sterols and stanols.... miraculous little buggers
they are.... not to mention the phytonutrients contained in VINE ripened fruits and vegetables. We've had to invent quite a few expensive medicines to replace these inexpensive natural medicines.

2. didn't you know that high cholesterol is GOOD
for you?

According to "Dr." Mercola and the folks over at Weston Price.

You should eat lots and lots of red meat, drink plenty of raw milk, and take a spoonful of OIL every day (castor and/or coconut oil).

Oh yeah - never ever eat soy 'cause it's "poison".

(sigh)

(I better put this, just in case: :sarcasm: )

4. I think there is even to it than that...
Recently, researchers discovered that adults who were breastfed as infants have lower LDL cholesterol. I suspect that there is a component of the human milk that somehow feeds something to the liver that is needed for optimum liver function to properly metabolize fats, but that's just my reasoning.

It is also my reasoning that some day, medical researchers will tell us that human milk "jumpstarts" the body's systems for a lifetime of good health, not just infancy and childhood. But that is getting off topic slightly.

5. There are only three proven ways to prevent heart disease
First, DON'T SMOKE. In 25 years in the broken heart business, I can still count the number of nonsmokers with coronary artery disease who required surgery without taking off my shoes.

Second, pick your parents appropriately. A family history of early onset coronary artery disease is the other co predictor of trouble down the road.

Third, die young.

6. And even those 3 don't guarantee you won't get heart disease if

you eat the wrong food, don't exercise, and die young of heart disease.
