Dog makes cell phone call to save owner's life
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13439261/

ORLANDO, Fla. - A 17-pound beagle named Belle is more than man’s best friend. She’s a lifesaver.

Belle was in Washington, D.C., on Monday to receive an award for biting onto owner Kevin Weaver’s cell phone to call 911 after the diabetic man had a seizure and collapsed.

“There is no doubt in my mind that I’d be dead if I didn’t have Belle,” said Weaver, 34, whose blood sugar had dropped dangerously low. Belle had been trained to summon help in just those circumstances. She had been taught to bite down on the number 9 on his cell phone contacting 911.

Belle was the first canine recipient to win the VITA Wireless Samaritan Award, given to someone who used a cell phone to save a life, prevent a crime or help in an emergency.

2. This is not the first time something like this has happened...
I remember something from about a year ago much like it.

Dogs are smart...in fact, I'd hazard a guess that they're a lot smarter than a lot of people give them credit for. If a five year old human child can know to use a phone in an emergency, there are a lot of dogs that are just as capable.

3. Probably the first time it's happened with a beagle
Not the geniuses of the dog world. I know, I live with one (my second). I love her, but she's not gonna win a Nobel anytime soon.

4. exactly my thoughts!!
My daughter has a beagle, and I know where you are coming from. However, they do have the best sense of smell of any breed, I think. That skill was used here.

5. Dogs: one of God's best gifts to us

Was it Groucho Marx who said: "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. On the inside of a dog, it's too dark to read".

7. Lovely, this dog. I fell on my head in the backyard a few ago and two
of my four dachshunds came over, one to have me throw his ball and the other to commisserate. :-D

8. LOL
Dogs are such individuals... I like to think if I fell on my head, all of my dogs would come to make sure I was all right.

Can't be sure about my Shiba, though. He's pretty self-absorbed. Nice dog, but way more self-possessed than just about any dog I've ever met.
