National Genographic Project: Anyone else participating?
Edited on Tue Dec-27-05 12:10 PM by supernova
The National Genographic project is attempting to collect DNA samples from around the world to trace the earliest human migration routes using your mitochondrial DNA.

I admit I'm fascinated with it and signed up. I can't wait to see the results.

If you are a privacy hound:

1) You are only identified by your DNA kit number on the kit you buy.
2) They don't check for so aren't aware of genetic flaws or diseases in your family.

It's like everything else; the more data they collect, the more accurate and more complete the results will be.
The only drawback is the cost of the kit: $99.

I just wondered if any other DUers were participating as well.

1. I was pretty excited about it until
I saw the price tag. :(

Maybe on a day when some extra $$ falls into my lap.

2. It's a bit pricey, I admit
But it's really the cost of the kit, around $100 is the standard cost of DNA kits, no matter what they're for.

It might just be tracing the migratory patterns of those who are well off now. :-(

3. Interesting statement:
**It might just be tracing the migratory patterns of those who are well off now**

I think you should email that to Nat'l Geo!

9. Just got my kit in the mail. It explains why its so expensive.
Rich people (ie Americans) are paying for the tests of indigenous people. :)

4. My wife signed me up for an Xmas gift!
Damn, she knows me to well. I'm really excited to find out the results. I can only trace my paternal line back to the expulsion of the French Huguenots to Switzerland.

5. You know you're not going to trace
your family that far back? To specific individuals, right?

What they do is assign you to a haplogroup, members of a specific genetic group.

6. I realise that. Still just the general details will be exciting.
But I am very excited to see the general flow back of my ancestors. Right now I know France about 500 years ago, then nothing. It'll be cool though to see where my ancestors really fit in.

7. I think so too
I can't wait to send my kit back in to see what they do with it. :-)

It's even amazing that they can do it at all. Did you see the original show? The Journey of Man, I think is called?

Sidebar: Spencer Wells is my new science guy crush. :D

8. Thanks! I just signed up.
I loved Oppenheimer's The Real Eve and Wells' The Journey of Man, and have been waiting for a chance to track my own lineage back to Africa.

Say it loud!

10. I've got a kit on my desk right now
I'm just waiting for the Holid... er, Christm... um, busy mail season to run its course before sending off my DNA.

This is SUCH a cool project!

11. I am. Y DNA makes me a member of Haplogroup G that may have originated in
India or Pakistan, and has dispersed into central Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

My Paternal line goes back to France circa 16th century.
