I realized when I got to the part about the sauce that it described almost exactly the first time I cooked a meal intended to be special for someone else, oh, 30+ years ago. It was a duck-- I bought a roaster specifically for that meal. I used lime juice instead of vinegar in the sauce, and orange marmalade instead of apricot jam. The dinner actually did turn out memorable (at least I remember it...). Took two days to clean the kitchen afterward, and I had to take a trip to the emergency room after dinner for a scalded foot.

Janet, if you're out there reading DU, I hope things worked out well in the end. :-)
