Almost time for PEEPS!!!! 46 days until Easter.
And Easter means PEEPS.

Personally, I hate Peeps, and always have, but I might buy some to play with, esp. after visiting the Lord of the Peeps website. I once read a recipe for marshmallow treats made with Peeps that began "decapitate 65 Peeps," which had me hysterical for quite a while.

Don't know if there are any Peeps fans out there, but it's almost Easter and it always makes me think of those little ducks and bunnies.

1. I love Easter candy the most
or at least I used to when Easter candy was something special - more special than regular-candy-that-you-can-buy-everyday-just-wrapped-up-special-for-Easter (and other holidays) - but NOT PEEPS! I can't even look at those things, those garrish colors, can't even imagine putting that stuff in my mouth.

I love real cream-filled chocolate eggs, all decorated for Easter, soft jelly beans, candy-coated malted milk eggs, jelly rabbits oovered with sparkling sugar, chocolate covered marshmallow rabbits - but NO Peeps and No Cadbury eggs with that yolk-colored center!

The problem is.... there are no independent candy-makers anymore, no fine chocolate shops where you can buy hand-dipped chocolate fondants, creams, and nuts, brittles and other things made by hand, with love and pride and quality ingredients.

I haven't had a good piece of Easter candy for several years now... so sad to say.

3. Sure there are housewolf.
There are lots of independant chocolate places. You just have to pay an arm & a leg for them.

When I have a chance I'll go dig out this months issue of Saveur if you want. They just rated their top ten chocolate stores. I don't know if any of them are selling Easter candy, but they're all good stuff.

:hi:

16. Oh, that's so true!
I remember when I was a kid, the easter candy was fabulous.

There were sugar eggs, probably 6" long, that had a pretty little scene inside that you could look at through a little view hole at one end (we never actually ate those). And baskets of marzipan fruits...so perfect. And I remember I once was given a little cast iron frying pan filled with eggs and bacon - all of it was candy - it looked so real!

Peeps are a poor substitute for those sorts of Easter candies, although we got them even then.

4. I've seen some peeps already.
A couple of years ago, someone posted the information that if you melted a bunny in hot chocolate, eventually all you would have are the little eyes floating on the foam.

6. Roasted peeps are fun....
They cook up nicely.

Yellow, only, though. The others have a weird taste, and the harder they get, the better.

7. Because I'm morbid that way... the Headless Peeps recipe.
Rice Crispy Peeps

Decapitate 20 peeps, reserving the heads.
(Fresh peeps work best).
Make Rice Krispy Treats according to package directions, substituting peep bodies for the marshmellows.
Pour mixture into pan and press into place.
Mentally divide the pan into squares and press one peep head into each "square" while the mixture is still warm.
Cool and cut into squares.
So festive!

(Morbid variant: use green food coloring on the peep bodies to make the treats green, then dip the heads in red food coloring for that Barnyard Death Scene look. Toy tractors and barns optional.)

have fun playing with your food!

10. Oh THANK YOU, Politicat for the recipe.

It seems, though, that my memory has exaggerated the number of Peeps needed. Maybe I was thinking of Peeps Rice Crispy Treats for a huge crowd! I love your morbid variation. You could decorate the whole easter table with barnyard toys. I have a whole collection of miniature farm animals, and I especially love the little piggies.

Edited for spelling.

11. Peep jousting!
Take two (or more) Peeps. Insert a toothpick "under the arm" of each Peep, as if it's holding a spear/jousting stick (not sure what they call those things). Position the Peeps in the center of the microwave with the toothpicks as if they're about to do combat. Close door. Turn on microwave.

I've never actually done this, so I'm taking it on faith that something interesting happens.

For a second round of microwave fun, try grape racing. Puncture one end of each grape so the steam has an easy, aligned escape route. Turn on the microwave.
