I have a suggestion to enhance our group
Edited on Thu Jun-08-06 12:29 PM by The empressof all
The vegetarian group utilizes a stickie to collect recipes.

IE: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=231

I'm wondering if we should ask Elad to add a few of these to the top of our group to help us collect our recipes in one handy place. (Demopedia is difficult to access and is not taking new contributions as I understand it)

I'm thinking we may want to ask for 5 stickies one for Appetizers/Soups, Veggies/Salads and Sides, Main Dishes, Desserts/Bakery, and Ethnic. I'm not sure if those are the best categories (Where would we put Pasta?)

I'm wondering if you all have any opinions about this. Is this something that we would like for our group or would it just clutter up the top of the forum?

Let's talk about this.

1. Sounds very logical.
I would put pasta in Mains, but that's me.

I say we ask.

2. good idea starting a thread on this TEoA. since Bearfan did so much
work on Demopedia and it really was handy when it was available I think it's a great idea!

3. EOA, I think this is a great idea.
Couple of things ... can a Mod make a stcky or must it be an Admin?

...... categories .... we ought to have one for equipment/tools. Just today there were some questions about it.

You asked about pasta ..... we could have a whole bunch of stickies, but that could get pretty unweildy. I'd maybe suggest 'appetizers and desserts', 'entrees', 'sides and veggies'. If they become crowded we either ask a mod to move things around and add another stickie, or maybe we could limit all posts in any sticky to a link to the original thread.

Anyway, its a great idea ... particularly now that Demopedia is inoperative.

4. Just the Admins can do the stickies
So you are suggesting just three stickies then, Appetizers/Desserts, Entrees, Sides/Veggies. My thinking is the Stickie thread would be for the recipe only. Posters would include a link to the discussion in the regular threads. This will give an opportunity for folks to discuss the recipe, ask questions and offer feedback. Ideally the poster would include the link to the recipe in the stickie.

It would be a matter of just copying the recipe part of the post and pasting it into another post in the stickie.

I'm not sure how a pots and pans stickie would operate based on what I was thinking.

5. Well, if one were to accept mt 'three sticky' notion ......
.... (and I'm not saying at all it is the only way to go) ... then it would be one additional sticky for, I dunno, "tools/equipment/tips/techniques' ..... all that stuff that's good info but not specifically a recipe.

6. I think H2S is on to something, 4 categories should cover most anything
and not get too unwieldy

7. But... but... but... but... but...
Where would bread and pizza dough go? They fit into all 3 of those categories, don't they?

8. Do you recall how many recipes we ever had in Demopedia?
Maybe, rather than grouping things by the most obvious category, we group them by anticipated volume ... such that each sticky would end up about the same size.

My inclination would be to put bread and baking in its own group cuz yer right ... it fits all of them and it fits none of them.

Is there a way to do five stickies? Is that an unweildy number? Which is why I asked the original question in this reply.

12. Another way to do it
A bit unorthodox, perhaps, but make a new username, like "Recipes", and start a journal, and then if you want to post a recipe, log on to it and post it and add it to the journal.

If Demopedia was up and running, it'd be better, but this would be a cheap way to pull it off and get the same effect.

13. hmmmmm now that has possiblities BUT Skinner is looking at killing
sockpuppets at some point IIRC and that would be one HUGH!!!111!!! sockpuppet

the other problem I see is how would the author get credit for the post?

while I like the idea there are a few obstacles to overcome I think.....

14. He'll grant okays in certain instances
and if posting was restricted to this forum it'd probably be okay, particularly as it'd have to be an "open" account.

As for credit, just put your name at the top: "Mom's Best Mud-Pie Recipe by AZDemDist6"

15. FWIW, sockpuppets were killed.
I can't remember when, but if you read the rules it says "only one account per member". Or something like that. So anyhoo, get rid of you sockpuppet before we get rid of it for you.

16. I admit I'm not that adept at the journaling thing
But I think it may become somewhat unwieldy. Would we have to scroll through all the recipes to find the ones we are looking for? If we keep them in a thread at least we can skim through subject lines for what we are looking for then lock the threads when they hit 200 or so and link them to an archived thread.

Unless we can create an index in a journal I think I would find it a PITA to look for a particular recipe.

17. You're not TEoA for nothing ......
That's what came up for with the journal idea. How to find a given recipe. I'm not even sure one can search a jorurnal.
