I have 25lbs of bread flour and nuttin' to put it in! Help!
Well, not exactly but I need a good storage solution. I bought a 25lb sack of bread flour the other day thinking I'd make my own bread for awhile because store-bought bread is so damn expensive. However, I way overestimated how much my really large, old tupperware container would hold. I filled that up, which held about 10lbs-worth, and my counter-top canister that holds 5lbs. Does anyone know of a source of air-and-bug-tight canisters or containers suitable for holding 25lbs. of flour? I'd prefer to store most of it in one container and some in my counter-top canister for easy access.

1. Just an idea .........
.... get a 40 lb cat litter container. (It is really just inter clay until the cat pees in it.) Wash it thoroughly. Pour in the flour. Cover it with saran warp and then tape the saran wrap to seal it to the container. Put the lid on to prevent the saran wrap from being accidentally punctured.

I know it sounds bad .......... but why not?

3. That would probably hold it but
since those are probably not made of food-grade plastic, I'd be wary of storing food in one of those. Might make it taste funny. Thanks for the suggestion, tho.

7. Get some gallon-sized ziploc bags and parcel it out into those, and then
put the bags into the cat litter bucket. I did this with all sorts of stuff for years. Just be sure you squeeze the air out of the bags before closing so the pack nicely.

2. I have used the metal cans that specialty popped popcorn comes in to store
bird seed and pet food before. The lids fit tightly and I've never had a bug problem when using them.

5. I have one of those but it's not big enough!
Thanks, tho.

I did look online and there are some pet food storage bins with tight lids that might work. $20 + shipping seems a lot but I need to do somethin'.

8. years ago, I went to Dunkin' Donuts
to get five gallon plastic pails with lids. There was a nominal charge for them, but it's my understanding that they can't be reused, only recycled. They are food grade, which makes it nice.

The only caveat is that the lids won't seal completely, so use that flour before you touch the stuff that's well sealed inside the Tupperware.

9. 20 pounds of dry dog kibble
stores nicely in unused 5 gallon paint buckets.

My little guys only eat a cup of food each day but I still buy the 20 pound bags. I pour some out into the container that I use every day to feed them from and leave the remainder in the bag which I place inside the paint cans and seal with a lid. Have space left over. Keeps it fresh and critter free. And paint buckets are cheap.

If I were going to do this for human food I would either store the food in the package it came in or package the food in ziplock bags or other food grade storage before sealing in the bucket.

10. Got a big freezer?
I'd probably just buy whatever size plastic containers at the dollar store and put it in the freezer.

11. Space Bags, vacuum seal type
Like the kind you store blankets in - but keep the flour in the original bag and put the whole thing in there and then suck the air out. This is only if you can't store it in the freezer, which is best.

12. I found something!
Edited on Fri May-30-08 06:41 AM by Love Bug
I found something to put my flour in! It's a 30-qt pet food container I picked up at a pet supply store. It has an air-tight lid and wheels, so it's perfect!

Thanks for all your suggestions, everyone!

Running off to bake bread...
