Okay. With great trepidation I ask . . .

What happens next if I install "Windows XP Service Pack 2?" I've heard, read folks who've had bad experiences with this MSFT patch!

Shall I merely call in the techie help now?

1. I installed it when it first came out. No problems except....

...that I had to update a couple of drivers. The main ones were the driver for my maxtor one-touch external usb drive, and the driver for my on board ethernet controller.

Maybe not ever directly due to SP2 since I hadn't updated drivers for a couple of years on these devices.

Except for that, I had absolutely no trouble upgrading to SP2.

2. Yeah, have 'em on stand-by ...

Seriously, though, I had few problems, and even the ones I did have were very minor. The people who have had serious problems are the ones people like me learned from. So, thanks to all y'all. :-)

Just be prepared for it. The biggest issue for a lot of people is the need to upgrade/patch certain other kinds of software and drivers after the SP2 installation. Firewalls, anti-virus stuff, networking apps, etc. were affected. Most have patches out now or were not affected at all. The problem a lot of people had early was that these updates to their software weren't out.

3. No bad experiences here.
I've installed it on several machines, Home and Professional. No ill effects.

5. Okay. Thanks to all of you! I'll give it a try . . . one more ?? . . .

Okay. Thanks to all of you! I'll give it a try . . .

One more question: This "Windows XP Service Pack 2" has been downloaded (automatically) onto my new computer for a few weeks now (maybe a few months) and I've refused to install it due to all the bad stuff I've heard. However, now that I am going to install it, how do I know if its the latest "Windows XP Service Pack 2" patch? Are there any differences, if you know, in this patch? Such as an earlier version, or something?

6. SP2 is a closed upgrade. It will not change.
MSFT Service Packs (SP's) are usually collections of patches, bundled together. Once MSFT issues an SP, it never changes that SP. If they release further patches, those have to be installed after the SP.

The only question we deal with is on the subsequent SP's. None of this applies here. Sometimes, when say SP3 is released, if you are still on SP1, you have to install SP2 and then SP3. Sometimes SP3 includes everything in SP2.
