Mobile Computing in Alaska - Possible for an RVer?
Edited on Sun Jan-13-08 10:19 AM by mcscajun
One of my sisters is making the trip of a lifetime; one she's been planning for years. She and her husband are going to spend three months in Alaska in an RV, and of course she doesn't want to be cut off from the 'Net during that time.

What are her options for online service up there? Anyone know? What kind of connectivity options should we be looking for in purchasing her laptop to support mobile computing in AK?

I should point out she doesn't have a fortune to spend on equipment.

1. Check out this site, a list of wireless providers in Alaska.
<http://www.business.com/directory/internet_and_online/internet_service_providers_isp/wireless/united_states/alaska/>

Please note these may be geared toward stationary residences(homes) of Alaska.

Also we have state forums here at DU, checkin with them.

4. Satellite is certainly an option
I'm not sure on the cost of a mobile dish but both Dish and DirectTV have Sat internet packages available. Unfortunately I think there is a contract required. That might not work.

How remote are they going? Are they going to be outside cell network range? They could get a data plan through a major carrier.

5. I've been using a Verizon broadband Cell ISP for over a year
I use the Kyocera 650 PCMCIA card. I live on a sailboat.

Had trouble with the software until I finally had to reload windows (for other reasons)

and then installed the Verizon software first before anything else and this time set it up as a stand alone app instead of using the Verizon software to switch between cell or wireless hotspot access.

Works fine now.

Just wish the rest of this laptop worked as well. It's got hardware trouble and is in a slow death spiral.
