Has WinXP required you to reinstall random applications?
Happened twice now, over a several month period.

I'd start a program -e.g. video converter but then it would ask for the install CD for something totally unrelated...

I had to reinstall 3 apps today as well because of it.

System is virus and spyware free.

1. Have you installed any new "major" applications lately?
Sounds like perhaps a vital commonly used DLL file or two may have been replaced with an unsupported version, so other programs that use that file can't use it and need to be reinstalled.

That's just a wild guess, but it's one small possibility. I'm certain others can come up with other scenarios, such as a virus that your scanner is not detecting.
