PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY.com) -- When a stray puppy was dropped off at the Portsmouth Humane society Friday, workers made a startling discovery. They found three pounds of metal, glass and more inside his stomach.
Humane Society workers rushed the pitbull puppy into surgery, but the Portsmouth Humane Society's medical funds are extremely limited. The executive director says they couldn't let the puppy die, but now they need to raise $1,700 for the surgery.
"(There were) chicken bones, wire, glass, string, rocks, sticks...," all in the pitbull's stomach.
"He'd basically eaten garbage," says Marks.
Marks says the garbage actually cut through Charlie's stomach and less than six hours after he was found, he was in surgery.
"He is the sweetest little dog. Right before he went into surgery he was licking our face and giving us kisses," says Marks.
You can go to any BB&T branch, and let the teller know to put your donation in the Portsmouth Humane Society Emergency Medical Fund or you can send a check to the Portsmouth Humane Society and in the memo line, write "For Charlie."
