OT: Renovations, part 5--the front staircase (Warning! Pic heavy!)
Hey peeps, the house has turned 143, and I have two more renovations to report. First, the front staircase. Sixteen steps. Painted deep blue, salmon, and ivory. Why? I didn't know. Then I happened across the same combo at Sherwin Williams. Historic colors--EXTERIOR colors, but never mind. Got those off, but it took two years filled with much stripping, scraping, sanding, and general tussling to go from this...

...to this:

And finally, a view from the top:

Next up, the master bedroom, otherwise known as Brigid's Bower! :D

1. Beautiful
Were these the stairs that you painted deep blue, salmon and ivory?
The photos make them look white, a muted yellow, and a dark stain.
Either way, these stairs are beautiful.

BTW, I'm so glad to hear that you are not timidly using whites and neutrals. Color reveals personality and give a feel to the room.

2. Thanks, SC!
No, we found them blue, salmon, and ivory--and quite beat up--when we moved in. Wish I had taken a pic before taking the stripper to them. x(

I started enjoying bold colors when we had our last house, which was a log home. With so much brown--log walls, hardwood floors--I took the advice of many "log home decorating" books and painted the few drywall walls vibrant colors. I have been more controlled in this house, but I still lean toward bold colors.

3. Lot's of work involved there!!
Another great job!! Do you know what? I've always wanted to live in a log home !! Maybe I'll have to settle for a "cabin in the sky"!!

6. It was a right pain in the patoot, I'll tell ya whut
All those corners and stuff. And the bottom layer of paint lodged itself in crevasses and...ugh. :scared:

I wasn't a big fan of the log home, I have to say. It was too small, and the land it was on was crap (swampy back yard), so that might have affected my opinion of it. I was glad to move out of the place, honestly. I like this house much better, despite how much work it needs.

5. I really like the idea of the oval rugs on each step!
Of course, it means that much more cleaning (dusting around the edges, vacuuming the carpets) but it's a nice look :D

8. I had to do it
The stairs are steep and damned slippery. I thought they would catch all the cat hair too, but interestingly enough the hair gets caught behind the treads (between each tread and each riser), so it's easier to vacuum. :D

9. The renovation is beautiful, and it lifted a lot of old energy!
A lot.

Ever hear knocks and such in the night? (not fur babies.)

10. Yanno what's interesting
Our resident ghost, a former housekeeper, was VERY active when we first moved in. She was upset at having new roommates and was afraid that we'd mess the place up like the previous renters and the two sets of owners before that. But the more we pretty the place up, the quieter she gets. I think she approves. :D

Oh--and a couple of years ago she zealously broke our wine glasses one by one (no other glasses or dishes--I suspect she was a Prohibitionist) until I asked her nicely to stop. To her credit, she did.

11. If the rest of your house has energy like the stairwell used to have
I wouldn't be able to stay a single night...credit to you for being understanding and caring about the residual energies. Enjoy, it looks wonderful!
