do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT say I TOLD YOU SO
Edited on Sat May-22-10 02:41 PM by northernlights
because the mistake I made on my taxes was NOT a wrong form, or a wrong number in a wrong box or inability to add or subtract or even inability to decipher cryptic IRS instructions. x(

I forgot to sign the form. In my total exhaustion after hours of trying to file electronically with the s/w blowing up on me halfway through every time, when I finally broke down and filled out the snail-mail....I FORGOT TO SIGN THE $*#$%*#@@!!!!!!!! FORM!!!!!!!!!!!!! x(x(x(

It gets worse. The IRS didn't pick this up -- but somehow in my exhaustion I forgot my &%*$@%)$!!!!!! MIDDLE INITIAL and used 1st inital last name instead :wtf: :wtf: :wtf:

So NOW I have to call the IRS on Monday because *their* enclosed instructions to me include a "voucher" to cut off and use for return addy in window is to *pay* additional taxes, not *be paid* refund. So I'm sure if the addy is correct or if they sent me a wrong piece of paper in the huge stack of everything they sent me in duplicate :wow:.

And my dilemma is -- do I tell them that I accidentally used my wrong middle initial, or hope they simply continue to not notice the discrepancy?!?!?! I'm thinking since the call will be essentially anonymous, I'll tell the rep and see what he/she says I should do to correct. Better to get the bad news sooner than later. x( x( x(

I'm remembering last summer when I followed the state tax reps instructions to a"t" and still "failed to prove" I had no income, and was denied my property tax rebate. :( :( :(

1. Well, I wish I had better advice but
I've recently come through a dilemma with the IRS, and I can tell you that they have changed their bedside manner. I've dealt with them up until last week with different reps who surprised me each time by being very nice.

Please take heart that you will very likely get a customer service rep who wants to help. I can't prove it, but it seems they got new marching orders not to treat taxpayers like criminals

2. the rep I spoke to when I was filling out my forms
as very nice and actually pointed out an additional refund that I qualified for under the stimulus plan that I wasn't aware of. Unfortunately, so was the rep I spoke to last year very nice when filing my state property tax rebate form.

It's not the reps I'm worried about, to be honest. It's the person processing the form...it's a lot like at work. Our operations dept. seems to operate under a different set of instructions than the customer service reps do. :(

Thanks for the hug, though. I'm trying to restore positivity in between totally freaking out.... I really, really, really REALLY need this refund. Not this instant, but certainly before Sept. 1, to buy the horses hay for next year.

3. WHAT?????
You have to file State Income taxes to get a property tax rebate??? I haven't filed them in years, since I didn't earn enough on SS income only to have to file!!! Plus now that I'm over 70, I don't file federal either. Who do you suggest I talk to about this as I may have some money coming to me??? My taxes on the mobile home are over $ 1,000. a year, even with the Senior discount I get. I filed Federal last year only so I could get my $250. rebate from the Feds.( year before last actually) I wish you luck with your situation, but my gut reaction was to call immediately and get it straight. I'm sure they realize that everyone makes mistakes, and if there is nothing to hide and you can document your "lack of income" you should have nothing to worry about. LUV YA...JA

5. sorry, but different state, JA
this is a state-level property tax rebate program for low income people in Maine. Connecticut has it's own state tax laws and program...they vary from state to state.

Of course I'm going to call immediately.

10. You're right!
duh... I don't know what made me automatically think we had the same laws. I do know that Ct. gives property tax rebates, so I guess my post was just a "knee jerk" reaction.....late at night...after my sleeping sedative started kicking in!!!LOL I'll have to look into my own status.

12. Well, on that note. I'll add that the
last rep I spoke to told me that I MUST call back on June 17th to speak to a manager to ensure that nothing is missing. I'm definitely going to call every week - since the post office said it takes 2 days for delivery.

Just saying that they're trying to make sure the right hand knows what the left is doing. Keeping my fingers crossed and staying positive for you and me  :)

4. Once when I had to deal with the IRS a lot, I found out their agents
are as confused as we are. One admitted to me there was a bible sized book with all the legal stuff and forms that they had to deal with and much of it was contradictory. :eyes:

6. it's a flippin' nightmare
I have to deal with it at work now, with completely unintelligible regulations around IRAs and UTMAs. Everything I've looked at gives contradictory interpretations, and when the "national quality whoever" "scores" our calls, whichever ones we quote they claim are wrong and fail us. (The supposedly independent "national quality whoever" is paid for by the client, who charges us a penalty if the call score average is below a certain level. Independent, my ass. :eyes:) So I've taken to simply reading the regulations -- without interpretation -- directly from the IRS publications. They *still* fail my calls

8. Oh noooooo!
Aw, NL, that sucks! And you must be :banghead:! There's gotta be nothing worse than having to contact the IRS to untangle a problem. Sending light that your path will be made smooth and you can work this out as quickly as possible.

9. when you suggested I use a tax consultant
I'll bet "cuz you can't even print your name right!" wasn't top in your mind!

I'm dreading dealing with it, but it is what it is. Hopefully what it *isn't* is lost refund x(

11. Personally, I have been using
professionals to do my taxes for some years now. They are just so complicated, and if you don't do them all the time, the once a year nightmare is just that, a nightmare.

But good vibes to you, and I sincerely hope it all gets straightened out.
