Aliens Found In Ohio? The 'Wow!' Signal
"When something truly startling happens, people say: 'OMG!' or the dreaded, 'Awesome!' But when Jerry Ehman sat at his kitchen table on Aug. 18, 1977, and saw six numbers and letters on the computer printout in front of him — six symbols that have become one of the grandest riddles in modern science — he chose the simplest expression of all. He took a red pen, circled the letters and then wrote..."

Thought ASAHers might be interested in the enigmatic Wow! Signal.

1. Didn't repeat......
One has to wonder about that. I have heard various paranormal investigators say that SETI isn't allowed to release anything to the public without governmental approval. Could this "no repeat" be something like in 1947 when the military said "weather balloon" after first disclosing that a "flying saucer" had crashed and been recovered near Roswell, NM? And the "wow" that can't be explained happened in 1997, and now it's a quaint little news story we get to read about in 2010.

EVERYTHING I am interested in the top heads of the totem pole have declared common humans unworthy of knowing. As the X-Files used to say "trust no one".

4. Yeah, but at least their resident skeptic does not
want the search to stop. It's cool that the idea of possibility and therefore imagination, creativity and perseverance in this pursuit, as science, are not negated. I'm always holding my breath whenever I hear anything SETI related as may be the end of the program. Right on, the search continues! Have you seen their website lately http://www.seti.org/Page.aspx?pid=1366 Pretty nice considering it's based on such a "woo" idea. :)

2. Hmmm. But, as the article points out,
why was it never repeated?

I also wonder if we are broadcasting on the same wavelength?

5. I wish I knew. But the part of the mystery that
narrow band radio signal is "not a natural phenomenon" and electronics are necessary to create it is really intriguing. My mind runs wild with scenarios of why an intelligence that's necessary to cause the signal does not do it again :eyes:

8. In the book that the septic types love to hate
(The Secret Life of Plants) one researcher found a way of gathering signals with plant matter. I don't remember a lot of the chapter now, but perhaps he had achieved a form of organically-generated "entanglement"? The term may be "quantum entanglement" but I know how much some just love the word "quantum" ;)

Basically, it would mean that aliens aren't using radio anymore, if they ever did to begin with. We humans assume quite a lot in determining how an alien civilization would come into being. It is not a given that they would discover radio before other forms of communication. Because we don't know any alien civilizations firsthand, secondhand, or nth-hand, it's all just guesswork on our part.

12. I "misspelled" on porpoise
;)

I used to use "sceptic" thinking the 'c' was silent, but it's just the British way of spelling "skeptic". My thoughts go immediately to "sepsis" and not "tank" :P

14. Although I could spell it the right way,
I'm probably not the only one around here that's tired of the "woo" word. It's okay when used lightheartedly, but the ones that use it most are usually doing so as an insulting nickname/label.
Time for the karmic boomerang y'all

3. Wow!
Well, at least I repeated the "Wow." :) I wonder what the other twelve things are that don't make sense.

6. LOLOLOL... You'd think our alien would be
courteous enough to repeat it.

I think the other 12 are covered here http://books.google.com/books?id=f7YKgXxyQmwC&printsec=frontcover&dq=13+things+that+don%27t+make+sense&source=bl&ots=7w4S51Lvex&sig=IZ8v-EuSrNJ-IB9-nEkwzBcKGYs&hl=en&ei=wlcBTPqVFJqaMtzBjNUO&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CCkQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q&f=false

too daunting for me to read right now but one includes only accounting for 4 percent of the cosmos. Where's the rest of it?

10. Yeah, that'll really make everyone
on the planet see that we are one instead of concentrating on our small differences. Sigh...wish that could happen before they make themselves known.
